Introduction
Hello! My name is Shellye and I recently found this site. I was thrilled to discover it. I live in Kokomo, Indiana. I recently started thinking very seriously about considering weight loss surgery. From what I have learned, I am considered morbidly obese. Gosh that sounds terrible doesn't it. I have a BMI of 50.25 Funny how I look in the mirror and I don't look morbidly obese to myself. Yes I am overweight, but MORBID. The word, it is so, so, morbid.
I think I am leaning to the Lap procedure as opposed to the bypass.
I have a history of depression and about 5 months ago my doctor possed the weight loss surgery question to me and I blew it off- Nope not for me. I will loose the weight the good old fashion way. Ahemmmm
Here I am 5 months later and I am still here. Not a pound skinnier.
So I put it to prayer and I have decided one way or another, I am going to have the surgery, whether my insurance pays for it or not.
Food has ruled my life since 2nd grade. I don't know what it is like to buy clothes at a "normal" store. I went to Universal Studios 2 years ago and I could not get the bars latched on some of the ride seats so I was not able to ride them. I have been fat my whole life and I declare WAR.
So Hello my new found friends. I am jumping on board. I will take you along on my weight loss adventure!
Shellye,
Welcome to the board! I'm glad you found your way here. Hon, we've ALL been in the same position you are in right now. Yep, 'morbidly obese' does sound terrible...maybe that's why we all ran from that term for so long. In truth, it is what it is...and what it is is unhealthy. So feel free to ask any questions that would help ease any doubts.

Welcome tot he boards Shellye.
We are so glad to have you among us!
I researched the surgery right here through this website for a long time before I had it, and am so glad I did. By the time it became a reality for me, I knew the procedures inside and out. I had originally planned on banding also, but my insurance refused it, saying it was still experimental. Then there were a couple other reasons I chose LAP RNY too. However, I never had a single complication and have done very well. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
I used to live in Kokomo about 20 years ago, when I was going through a divorce. I liked it there. Now Ilive west of Indianapolis about a half hour.
Any time you have a question, or just wanna post anything, please od! themore the merrier, really!!
Blessings!

Welcome Shellye!
My name is Linda, and I had lap RNY in 11/06. I looked into surgery in 11/04, and decided I was going to do it the 'old fashioned' way, too. I went another year and a half, and just ended up gaining more weight. So I went ahead with surgery. I wanted the band too at first, because I thought it seemed safer, but my surgeon recommended the RNY for me. I really trusted her, and went with that. I haven't had any complications, and have lost 54 pounds in about two months.
I wish you well on this journey!

Welcome Shellye!
I'm new to the board too, and like you hated the term 'Morbid'. I also chose the lap band and am so very glad I did! I had the surgery 5/05 and have just reached my 100lb loss marker! Good luck to you, and from what I've seen since I came here this place is full of love, understanding and support!
Hope
Welcome. I enjoyed reading your post. You sound like most of on here. The storys don't vary much from yours. You'll be amazed at how wonderful it feels to lose. I looked into the surgery for 3 years before I decided to do it. When I did go forward I thought I wanted the Lap band. After talking to my surgeon we decided RNY would be best for me. At a year out now I'm kind of wondering if the band may have worked OK for me. I've found that my problem losing was I never felt full and not the food I was eating. I have plateaued now at 110 pounds down since I can eat more now it doesn't seem to comming off. I'm still doing what I'm supposed to with the diet and exercise. I keep thinking now that if I had the band they could make it tighter now and I could get off this plateau. Just a thought for you as you decide. Good luck and keep posting! Have you consulted with a surgeon yet?
