I do.I had to find a "center of excellence". In Indiana that leaves you with St. Vincents and IU North. I was NOT required to do a 6 month supervised diet, just the 3 months my facility required (IU Health). I had to get a referral from my PCP to attend the seminar/primary consult. Approval was easy. If you qualify they tend to approve and not look for a reason to deny like some insurances do at times. Was submitted on a Friday got approval the next Tues :)
My Dr. is Dr. McKenna. I was going for the sleeve but 2 months in IU said that HIP will approve the sleeve then refuse to pay. They said they had so many this happened to that they quit sleeving HIP patients. That may be IU specific, but I can't see St. Vincents putting up with it either. Also, I chose IU for a reason so I wasn't willing to switch to St. V's just because of a hiccup in the road so I never even looked into St. V's position on it. So, basically I chose from RNY and the band (I'm scared of the malabsortion with RNY enough.. DS ain't happening! Don't know if it would have been covered though) and since foreign objects and I don't mix well I am going with the RNY.
I'm in the final stages of pre-op (pre-op class then surgery) so I can't answer your last 2 questions yet :) Good luck!!
If you have any other questions I'd be happy to try to answer them :)
Waiting for surgery
My Thought on WLS: I can restrict what I eat, or I can do nothing and let what I eat restrict me!!

I've been on a constant diet for the last two decades. I've lost a total of 789 pounds. By all accounts, I should be hanging from a charm bracelet. ~Erma Bombeck
I didnt have one. My insurance did not require a 6 month diet.
The only thing I have to do is clear liquids day before surgery.
Did you go through IU for your surgery? I'm also wondering about the liquid diet... if we have one. I was always told that "we'll talk about that after you're approved" when I asked because they wanted me to focus on the now and not the later but now I've been approved and wanna know lol.

Had pre op diet class and now the folders are different colors for different surgeries.
When I went for my pre-op nutrition class they were pretty good about pointing out what applies to ds and what goes with the RNY and we weeded out my packet as we edited the info. I was fortunate enough to have someone who was aware of the changes but am concerned as well for others who may not and them have issues due to info in the packets.
We met at the intial consult, once more before surgery and then the morning of the surgery....afterwards I saw her a couple times at the hospital and have been dealing with her PA ever since...She is all business and knows her job to a T but not a hand holder so yes...write down all your questions and have them ready for her...she will make sure you understand your concerns. Make sure you utilize the dieticians and her staff for questions as well...they are great
Medicare only here but it took about 4 weeks
Just keep emailing them....Melinda was great about updating me that way!
Most RNY'ers DO NOT DUMP.
Only about 30%.
We dont need SF vitamins and they dont have to be chewable. As long as they are no bigger than an Aspirin or cut in half you are fine. Make sure they are Complete Vitamins. Have 100% USDA recommended amount of vitamins and minerals
.If you are having surgery at St. Vincent Carmel you will have a 4 hour diet class before surgery. You will be given all the info you need about vitamins and nutrition.
I am almost 11 years post op and I take Meijer's Ultimate Women's Century Multivitamin. I also use their calcium citrate and my levels have all been fine.
