I think the best thing you can do WITH your wife is go to her appointments pre-op, share your concerns with her and the surgeon. Do as much research as you can about the surgery. Obviously you are a very caring and inquisitive husband, as you have taken the time to create an account on OH- I think that is very sweet! I don't think that anyone can tell you 100% without a shadow of a doubt that there won't be any complications- there are a chance of complications with any surgery...with that beign said there are GREAT complications with morbid obesity!! As far as how it will affect your relationship, that is also a personal case-by-case scenario that is truly up to you and your wife on how you handle it. My husband and I had a lot of discussions prior to surgery and we both agreed that my health far out weighed being worried about having extra skin..He was attracted to me with fat IN the skin, so the absents of fat shouldn't matter...I wish you the best of luck on this journey with your wife! and kudos to you for being there for her when she needs you!

I had my surgery at Clarian North on 03/25/10 and was told the same thing as the other poster, that they occasionally do the pain pumps but have stopped because people were either abusing them or were afraid of them and having break-thru pain. Strange, that you heard otherwise because we should have been in pre-op class veeeery close together, if not in the same one. I am sorry you had so many complications post-op..that doesn't sound like very much fun at all. Where you in the ICU by chance? just wondering because I work on that unit at Clarian North. :) I hope you are feeling much better now!

Topic: RE: food stages at Clarian North?
I would edit my other reply to add this but I didn't see it...

At your pre-op seminar they will give you measuring cups and spoons and also before you leave the hospital they will give you a TONof cups to measure fluid and tons of medicine cups. The tiny tupperware cups like christie mentioned are good to have at home, I see myself using them for a long time. When I first got home my husband made a can of cream of chicken soup and divided it into 6 little cups ( I think they each had 2 oz) and when it was time for a meal I just put one in the microwave for a few seconds and I could eat!

Good Luck!
Dr.Mattar is my surgeon- he is awesome, I love him!

Hello! I had my surgery done at Clarian North and when you go to your pre-op seminar (about 2 weeks before surgery) you will get a binder that breaks down everything you can have/can't have..it even has a grocery shopping list for each stage! I lived by my binder during the first two stages! You will be on full liquids for week 1 and Puree foods for week 2-3 (actually until post-op day 21) then you will move onto soft foods until post-op week 8 where you are released to eat "regular food". The seminar is SO helpful but if you want to stock up, I know in the early days I ate cream soups (98% fat free- NO chunks) in between protein drinks and water. By the time you move onto puree foods you will want to get out of the house and start walking around. I went grocery shopping post op day 4 with no pain meds just to get out of the house! Good Luck and you will love the Clarian North staff! OH...and don't forget the gas relief meds!!!

You are welcome! I remembered some other great ideas for you late last night. You may be able to handle the LIGHT DRINKABLE YOUGURTS during the full liquid stage, but if not try them in your PUREED STAGE.I was able to drink the drinkable yougurt in the full liquid stage.Always remember to sip slowly, all your meals that are measured 2oz should take you 20 min. to eat.And always wait the 30 min. before you drink anything after you eat.The clock will be your best friend for a long time. You will not get a hunger sensation reminding you to eat, that is why scheduling your 3 meals a day are important. My favorite soups that I had on hand were cream of mushroom, chicken, broccoli, aspergas, all fat free of corse. I still use the soups and I always have broths on hand. The protein that you will need will come from alot of protein shakes that you will have to learn to love.Do you like a brand yet? did you check out the recipe forums? Alot of people think that sugar is the only thing that will make you DUMP,and get sick but too much FAT will cause it too!A good protein drink to try is the ADKINS brand at WALMART. THEY ARE READY TO DRINK,AND THEY ARE MORE TOLERABLE THAN SOME OTHERS.Also if you do not have a GREAT blender you should buy one of those also. One of these days I am going to buy the HEALTHMASTER BLENDER,that Montel Williams does a commercial for. There is alot of info to know and I will be glad to help you thru all the stages. You will get thru this and be on the losers bench real soon.

I have not had any diarrhea or vomiting YET.. and hope I don't get any. I have been drinking all day everyday. I seem to be doing pretty well, just a little tired still. Hope all is well with you.

Ok so tell me again that she will be fine. I really love my wife and want her to be happy and healthy. This whole thing just has me on edge. I'm worried about her, about post-op complications, how this could effect our relationship, and the flap thing. (We have a gr8 sex life and I don't want it to go down hill) Sorry I'm a protector I do everything I can to keep her safe, well the kids too, it's an occupational hazard you could say. Can't anyone just tell me that everything will be ok....Katsgrl1 you can reply in person! Everyone else please just some positive feedback is what I need.
