Topic: low blood sugars

This really freaks me out when I read about it, does it happen to everyone ? I'm not a diabetic  but will I be one after surgery ? I read people's stories about hypoglycemic and don't want to end up like that.  It's scary  I have a 2 year old to take care of and I don't want to pass out. My husband is a diabetic and I have seen his low's and it scared  me because he was not himself. I don't want to be a diabetic with problems with low sugars.

Topic: Attendance Sheet

I don't have one in my packet to take to support group. Was I suppose to have one in there. I'm going to St Vincents in Carmel. I have this friend of mine that had weight loss surgery 5 years ago in Michigan and she told me I can go anywhere as long as I go to one support group is that true ? I might have to weight untill the second week of the month if not, thanks Jazzy ! Do you know why they won't let you go to other support groups because they are all peoples stories on the surgery.

Topic: RE: South Bend.... Michawaka Suppoort Group

I never got a attendance sheet with my packet. I just got a call to join one support group, my papers are just information on surgery no attendance sheets. My friend had RNY five years ago but did not go to St Vincents she went to Michigan and she told me I can go anywhere just as long as it is a weight loss support group because she did. Does it matter ?

My surgery was done via Medicare and Medicaid, since it was part of my disability, and weight loss could (and did) ease the symptoms of my primary disability ( lupus and fibromyalgia).  I can now see the finish line in my quest to get off disability and again become productive.  I am gearing up for excess skin removal. After having been over 350/400 pounds for so long, I have a lot of stretched out, sagging skin left from my weight loss.  Once it is gone, I will be at my "chart weight" (what the weight charts say I should weigh for my height and bone structure).

Dr. Inman is the only doctor in the state who does the Duodenal Switch, and one of only 75 worldwide who does the procedure.  She does other weight loss surgeries as well, but please, go look at www.dsfacts.com for more info on the duodenal switch.  There are many advantages over the others if you have a chronic illness, like I do, and certain medications, like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) are needed to treat it. If I had a gastric bypass or LapBand, I would not be able to take those kinds of medications in any form. I could if I had only the gastric sleeve, but most insurance plans only cover the gastric bypass or DS.  At least, I know those are the only two that Medicare and Medicaid cover. The DS, as it's called,  also has the best numbers for EWL (Excess Weight Lost) and is the closest to a permanent solution for obesity that there is right now.  There is very little regain, if any.  I'm going on 5 years post op, and still losing at will. (and sometimes *not* at will - it seems that I just sleep it off, sometimes!)   That said, it is very vitamin and protein supplement intensive, because it is highly malabsorptive, so nutrition has to be paid very close attention, and a high protein/low-to-moderate carb diet is essential, as are the vitamins and minerals - they are *not* optional!  Actually, they are not optional with any weight loss surgery, but they are extremely important with the DS. You *will* have to learn a lot about nutrition and which vitamins support which body functions.

After this surgery, the only foods that you will absorb 100% of are foods containing high levels of simple white sugar(Like candy), and white flour(white bread and white pasta products).  These will also give you some very  unpleasant  intestinal effects should you indulge in them too heavily, which is a deterrent in and of itself.

After nearly five years, I can truly say that this surgery is giving me my life back.  I wish I could have had it done earlier, and I would do it again in a heartbeat if I had to!

***If you have already had your surgery, I'm sure you picked the one that was best for you. Good Luck****

If you're going through St. Vincent's in Carmel, you have to go to their group.  It meets at the Mishawaka/Penn Public Library on Lincoln Way West in Mishawaka.  Second Tuesday of every month, from 6:30PM  to 8 PM.

St. Vincent's will give you a group attendance verification sheet, which you must have signed by the group moderator for each week that you are required to attend (requirements vary, based on the psychologist/psychiatrist recommendation).  When you get your sheet, please be sure to make blank copies.  Unless they've changed, you will need a fresh sheet for each group meeting you are required to attend.

I was required to attend for six months prior to surgery, but I'm sure it was due to my very high weight and severe morbid obesity (SMO).  I attened groups around the state, including a couple in Carmel.  I don't think there was a group in my local area affiliated with St. Vincent's at the time I had surgery, in fact, I was making plans to attend monthly out of town groups post-op.   Right now, St. Vincent's Carmel is the only location that has support groups specifically set up for DSers                    ( Duodenal Switch patients)

Other groups are either RNY(gastric bypass), LapBand, or General ( for any type of weight loss surgery).

Topic: X-Post -Bariatric Supply Pantry - how to get started

For several years, I have had this vision of starting a food pantry-style outreach center with bariatric supplies, i.e., protein powder, vitamins, blender bottles, etc., but I just don't know how to get started.

Even now, I  am finding myself in need of this type of service, as many who have had surgery are falling on hard times, including me,  and may be hard-pressed to afford the things we need to stay healthy.

My initial research for this at least in Indiana, says that having a medically trained person there  would not be necessary, and while it is a specialty service, the items would need to be things that anybody can use, whether they have bariatric surgery or not.

Anybody with Ideas?

Topic: RE: X-POST -St. Vincent DSers esp. newbies: Beware education packet! Gives RNY info for DS aftercare!

saterry-

The sheets have always been different colors for different surgeries,  DS was pink when I had mine.  The issue for me is with the information printed on them.  It was 90-100g when I went through.  It could have been lowered.

I'm sure protocol changes, but for me, if I don't stick to the higher values, I get deficient very fast.
