Question about straws & support group...

Hey Everyone...I know we were told at St. V NOT to drink from a straw at our pre-op class, but I can't remember WHY we aren't suppose to do this...can anyone remind me??? Reason I ask is because I accidentally forgot & stuck a straw in my drink the other day & used it...I found that when I'm drinking a soda that there's less bubbles, and gassiness than when I drink from a can, bottle or cup, I actually drink less in a sip from a straw than I do if I drink from a cup...what's the deal?!?!? Could this cause problems for me in the future??? I was unable to make it to support group because of a sick baby & hubby, can anyone share with me what I missed??? I hope this finds everyone doing well...take care!!! Thanks...Shari

we are supposed to avoid straws due to the excess intake of air they cause. I don't believe that is forever. I know many post ops who drink from straws, especially when dining out.

Hi Shari!! I missed you at support group last night! It was a really good meeting. It was a rather small group and I think that makes for really good discussions. There were a few people waiting for approval and people waiting to be approved. And a few of us "veterans". It was really good. About the straw, when I saw Dr. Evanson at my last check up I asked when I could use a straw, he said it was no problem at that point. I take littler sips out of a straw, too. I missed you, too, Linda and Peggy, at the meeting last night! I know Linda you said if it snowed you wouldn't make it. Julie

DARN!! I figured the cancelled it with all the school and activities that were cancelled... Sometimes when eatting out I sip from a straw.. consider it more sanitary then dringing from the glass...heck I dont think some of the items are washed that well... germaphobe... Linda

Thanks to all of you that replied!!! I thought that was the case with the straws, but I personally didn't experience that...it was just the opposite for me...less air I think!!! Anywho...I too missed you at support group...I had to work a lil later than I wanted, and then I had a sick hubby & baby, so I went on home, plus I was unsure of what the weather was going to do. I'll be there next month!!! I hope you are doing well...it's been awhile since we talked!!! Linda...I hope you are also doing well with your new knee!!! Ya'll take care & I'll see you soon!!! It's to avoid taking in excess air. But I have always used a straw...I just took little sips. Course now I drink normal
