Update on my horrible pain.....
Hello everyone,
I'm happy to say that as of Friday evening, I have been feeling much, much better. I was in agony on Friday, every time I ate and/or drank I felt like I was having labor pains. I have called the clinic so many times, and they tell me to go to ER (Dr mandelbaum is out of the Country). When I went earlier in the week, I had to wait there for a little over 3 hours, not fun.
I had planned on going back late Friday night, but lucky for me I have been feeling better. (I have had diarrhea, which I have not have at all since the surgery, not sure if that has something to do with it) Only eating mashed potatoes, eggs, oatmeal.
I am having problems drinking the protein shakes, and read on here that there is a s.f. nestle's quick that will work, where can I get that at?
Wed., I get to eat more foods, anyone have any good ideas?
Thanks, Melissa
Hi Melissa,
Glad your feeling better! I too had awful pains after my surgery and although they got continually better over time, I had them for 6 weeks. I really had a problem with milk and no matter what protein shake or S.f supplement I tried, it was whatever is in the milk (powder or liquid) that I could not handle. I ended up drinking Isopure. I was able to drink it without any problems and a 20 oz bottle has 40 gms of protein! There are different flavors (orange-pineapple, punch, grape, berry etc) and I started off mixing them a little with some juice like mixed berry for the berry drink, grape with the grape (although I am not a fan of grape at all) just so that I could get the protein in.
Hope this helps ---I just recently starting eating some leans meat and chicken and some veggies but every doctor is different on what they want you to eat so I don't have any suggestions there
Good luck with your progress!
Stacey
Glad you're feeling better...
I would start with refried beans... scrambled egg.. very wet tuna salad..I also ate mandarian oranges.. regular oranges are to hard to get all the rind off..and that just wastes room..
I also had string cheese and milk for the first 6 weeks.. adding the above slowly.. protien drinks sucked for me..

Melissa,
My protein drink of choice is the pina colada Strive on Bariatriceating.com. The SF Quick is available at groceries...where the regular Quick is. It's powder. There is NO PROTEIN in it so the only protein you will get is that from your milk. And remember...sugar free does not mean calorie free.
Please experiment some with protein drinks before giving up. I personally didn't care for the Isopure...but they may be your thing. Nectar fuzzy naval is one alot of people swear by (not my thing either). You will find your drink, but don't give up. Protein is critical for us post-ops...and protein shakes are extra critical to those who aren't at a level to get the protein via food.
At your stage...I would fix creamed soups and use it like a gravy for the mashed potatoes. I also fixed cheese crackers (place 2-3" round mounds on parchment paper lined cookie sheet, bake for 10 minutes at 350), spread refried beans on it, top with shredded cheese. A mini tostada!! After you get through with this stage, there are alot of canned/chopped meats. Ham was my favorite.

ps...amazing how much a backed up bowel can hurt, huh?
Melissa, I am just a little ahead of you in post op. I just now added wet tuna salad a week ago and it was wonderful...I usually still only take it for 1 oz as the meats tend to creep up quickly and can be uncomfortable. I bought some sliced deli turkey and ham and it is good. I tried some watermelon, cantalope, honeydew and strawberries. They were sooooo good...I just take it slow and eat only a little to begin with and then have some of the soft foods too. I love my cottage cheese, String cheese, mashed potatoes and refried beans. Last night my hubby made baked breaded chicken patties, mashed potatoes, country gravy and peas. I had my 3 one ounce cups and had 1oz peas, 1oz mashed potatoes and 1oz sliced deli turkey that I pulled apart into little pieces. I felt like I was eating so good! For lunch I like to have about 3 pieces of fruit and string cheese and maybe tuna salad. I like the variety and try to get 3 different items in for my 3 ounces. I always eat my protein first so I am sure to get it in in case I get too full. Check over your list of foods from the Dr. and see what sounds good to you and then go slow. You will do wonderful! Bon Appetite!!
