You did not say why your sister was turned down but sounds like WLS is one thing that might help her. I went thru the Bariatic Center at St Vincent Hospital in Carmel (just North of Indianapolis) and finally had my surgery in Nov 2005. When I had the surgery I was confined to a wheel chair because of the pain in my back and knee. Today the wheel chair is no longer part of my life. I can walk almost anywhere. I have lost 96 pounds which has taken much of the pain out of my back. I was told by many doctors that if I lost weight I would eliminate most of the back pain. I did not believe them, but I sure was wrong. By the way St Vincent Hospital caters to overweight people with equipment to handle them, even chairs in the waiting rooms.
I wish your sister all the best.

Hi Lisa...I too was told that I was TOO HEAVY & had to lose 75 lbs before my 1st surgeon would do the RNY Gastric Bypass on me...well duh...that's why I needed the bypass...to lose weight. I also suffered from severe back pain, but found Dr. John Huse to take care of my needs. Dr. Huse is awesome...he completed the RNY bypass on 10/31/05, and repaired 3 hernias for me, and here I am 4 months later, down 85 lbs, and my back pain has lessened, but I was told that as I go in my jouney my back will probably always hurt some because your body has to adjust to everything new!!! Dr. Huse uses St. Vincent in Carmel, IN...he is wonderful!!! Best wishes to your sister, and to you for helping her...I hope she can find what she's looking!!! ~~~Shari
