Nicotine Gum

Ok Guys, I need to know if anyone has heard anything about using Nicotine Gum after WLS. I quit smoking (again) in June to prepare for this surgery. Of course now I am hooked on Nicotine Gum (again). I didn't have any for the first 8 or 9 days after surgery, but with combination of not having the nicotine gum and not being able to chew food, I was going nuts, so I started up again. I know, it's all an oral fixation thing! My question is, do you guys know if this gum can have any bad effects on my new pouch? I sure hope not, and I really don't want to have to give up my gum, but if it is going to burn a big hole in it, I certainly don't want to continue chewing. I should ask my doctor, but I think I'm afraid of what he is going to say!

Julie, I have no idea what a surgeon will say about 'nicotine' gum...but all of them I have heard of has definately said no gum at all. I just started chewing gum again about a month ago. As early out as you are, I don't think I'd risk swallowing it and causing damage to the pouch. Good luck in your endeavor to quit smoking. It took the patch & welbutrin for me. It'll be 2 years in July...and mentally, I still think like a smoker. Oh well, I also think like I'm still morbidly obese too. Sherri

Try the patch starting with 21 mg and go down to 14 mg the 2nd week and then 7mg the 3rd week. That's how I quit the first time...darn if I didn't start smoking again 6 months ago (after 6 yrs of not smoking ). So it's back to the patches for me As for oral satisfaction...I think I am going to do the SF popsicles. i don't want to risk swallowing gum and having it get stuck and then having to explain why I am chewing gum
