I'm 6 days post op and really feeling hungry most of the day. I'm eating what I'm supposed to and getting tons of water in. What gives?
I have NOT started protein drinks yet b/c I still am very gassy.

Please tell me this is normal and there is nothing wrong with me.
I really don't want to go back into the hospital.

You should try some protein drinks. Lack of protein will make your body weak and feel hungry. Designer whey protein is available at your local grocery store, and can be mixed in as little as 3oz of water/milk. You can also be dealing with head hunger, which can be very trying.
Good luck!

When you had your surgery nerves were severed, so your brain really can't tell hunger or fullness.  It is called head hunger and is activated by sight of food, smell of food, texture, memories, etc.

You do need to start your protein.  You will be gassy anyway, so no reason not to start.  You need protein to heal otherwise your body will rob it from muscle (your heart is a muscle).

Be sure to attend support group or email/call your dietician or surgeons office with questions - you paid for that advice.

Be active on the OH forums - they help with motivation, accountability and getting answers to your questions.

I have to agree with both posts above! DO get your protien shakes in! The Carnation  SF. Breakfast Drink is full of protien, & your body needs it to heal! I know of someone who didn't & now has serious heart problems. You don't want that girl!!!  Oh, being gassy is part of the surgery also- so, just pass it & do what you need to ! I will be praying for you- & if you want to pm. me on here-feel free. .

Are you getting your walking in? That will help with gas too. Everything is still waking up. I really think my walking has helped in that department.

Congrats on your surgery.  First off,  get you some Gas X strips.  It helps relieve some of the gas but you dont have to swallow anything in your tiny pouch.  You should get used to being gassy.  It is a part of the everyday life of theWLS patients.  LOL

Next,  Protein, protein, protein.... you need to get it in ASAP  the longer you let your body deplete it's reserve of protein... the harder it is to build it up.  You will lose hair around 3 to 6 months out when your protein levels drop low.  So get it going now and hopefully you wont lose much hair at all.

It's really important that you try to get in lots of water, the protein, and the exercise.

About the hunger issue,  we have a smart group here... they are right.  The Vagus nerve is the nerve that is severed during surgery and it tells your brain several things about your digestive system.  So when you eat too fast or too much, don't be surprised by hiccups or a runny nose.  It's all triggered by the Vagus nerve.  So your hunger issue right now are most likely head hunger issues because you were eating on a regular basis just a week ago.  Chewing food may seem like an insignificant thing last week but now, your body is missing it so it thinks you are hungry because you are not chewing or crunching anything!!!!  :)  That will pass.

I am glad you feel comfortable with posting and asking questions.  We are here for you!!!!

hugz,
Tracy
