Hi, I am seriously considering surgery -- my BMI is > 40 and I'm 38.  I've tried OA, Weigh****chers, working with dieticians, medically supervised (drug-based) weight loss ...

My niece just had RNY in February and is doing wonderfully.

However, I have read a lot about complications here on this site, and want to PLEASE hear more so I can make an informed decision.

I'm considering having the surgery before 12/31/10.

Thanks!

Hi Theresa,  I started contemplating surgery back in July of 09.  Went to the seminar and surgeon consult in Oct 09.  Had to do a 6 month diet/exercise program required by insurance.  Then when I finished all of my requirements I was on the fence between having the lap band or the rny.  It took me probably 6 more months and another consult with a lap band surgeon and LOTS AND LOTS of researching and reading before I decided on the rny.  I now have my surgery scheduled.  But, I would very highly recommend reading all you can and really surfing the various bariatric forums.  Like any surgery (wisdom teeth, root canals, etc.) you will always hear horror stories.  People love to tell their scary stories!  But, seriously, read and learn all you  can and attend some support groups and talk to people face to face about their experiences.  Good luck!  Sincerely, Laura

I along with several of my family members have had various kinds of WLS.  We have had a few complications but none of them would have changed our minds.  The only complications I am having (2 yrs out) is that my teeth are losing their old fillings and I am needing to get dental work done alot.  Is it possible that teeth lose weight too?  LOL  I am not sure why it is happening like that but my sister experienced it too.

Other than that, no real bad issues at all.  Just the normal this and that which comes along with other medical conditions.  As for the surgery itself,  I love my RNY  and I would do it all over again only sooner!!!  LOL

Good luck to you and hope you find the answers you seek.

hugz,
Tracy

Do you think that some of the tooth issues are from lack of nutrients?  I see where there is all kinds of work that must be done to ensure supplements are taken, etc. ...

Just trying to figure everything out ...

THank you!
