Lapband to RNY, Ugh-is it going to work?

I joined the board back in 2006, I had lap band surgery in July 2007.  I lost 89 pounds, but have put about 9 back on.  I lost about 84% of my excess weight.  I can't complain at all.  I loved my band, but it doesn't love me.

I am back now, because my band has got to come out.  I have been having problems for the last 3 months with throwing up everytime I lay down, doesn't matter how much I eat or whether I eat at all.  Dr. Clark has had me do several barium swallows.  These show that my food just doesn't want to flow through at any rate at all.  Plus I just had an upper GI and they said the band placement looks good, but it does show that I have reflux and the starting signs of Barrets disease.  So it's gotta go.

Dr. Clark and his staff are trying to see if they can get my insurance to cover converting to Gastric Bypass, so we'll see.  I hope I can do that, because i really fear gaining all my weight back if I am left on my own.

Anybody have this done?

I had a r-n-y this past Feb. on the 3ard,but I first had a lap-band put in about 3 years ago. The only difference is that I had a band slippage in less than a week after it was put in. I than chose to have it removed instead of repaired. Fast forward feb 3,2010 I was approved for the R-n-y as a revision and I have been happy ever since. I went to the Clarion Bariatric Center and had the best experience with a great staff.Dr. Mattar was my surgeon and I am so happy I picked him! Please keep me in touch I think everything with your revision will be great.Congrats on the 89 pounds lost!

Thanks for your response.  Makes me feel better.  You wouldn't think I would be nervous about this.  I wasn't nervous at all about the band surgery.  I guess maybe it's just having them actually staple and bypass that scares me.

I had a LapBand several years ago and within the first year it slipped.  I chose to be revised to a RNY.  I am 4 years out and am so glad I ended up with the RNY.  I've maintained my weight within a 5 to 10 pound range.    Going into it originally I was also scared of the RNY and the malabsorption.  I take all the recommended supplements and then some.  I still supplement with a whey protein drink everyday.  But I can honestly say that if I didn't tell you I had weightloss surgery, you would never guess it.

So don't worry - it's not always easy but it is worth it in the end!

Thanks Jen,  that makes me feel alot better.  I know I am going to have to get real serious about taking vitamins.  I am horrible at it now, but doesn't matter as much with the band.  Someone else I know who had RnY told me she takes Biotin.  Says it helps with hair loss.  But glad to hear that after several years out, you are able to maintain.

Thanks again.
