I will be having my RNY at Clarian North around the beginning od June. I was wondering what the eating guidelines are? How long on the liquid, soft foods, etc. Just wondering so i can stock up on a few things. Thanks!

I had my surgery at St. V's, so can't help you there.  When Shanna checks in, I know she had her surgery at Clarian North, so she can tell you.

At St. V's, we got a binder listing all the food stages and what we could have at our pre-op nutrition class.  Perhaps you will too?

I wouldn't stock up on a lot of stuff ahead of time.  Trust me, things you like now you may hate after surgery.

Refried beans with shredded cheese will be your new best friend... LOL

One thing I would stock up on is the little portion cups with lids.  You can get them at Gordon's Food Service.  Get the one ounce size to start with.  That way, when you make a scrambled egg, or open a can of refried beans, you can portion it out and put it in the fridge for several meals.  It was a lifesaver for me.  I stored them in the fridge in a small Tupperware container.

Good luck, and we'll save a seat on the loser's bench for you!!

I would edit my other reply to add this but I didn't see it...

At your pre-op seminar they will give you measuring cups and spoons and also before you leave the hospital they will give you a TONof cups to measure fluid and tons of medicine cups. The tiny tupperware cups like christie mentioned are good to have at home, I see myself using them for a long time. When I first got home my husband made a can of cream of chicken soup and divided it into 6 little cups ( I think they each had 2 oz) and when it was time for a meal I just put one in the microwave for a few seconds and I could eat!

Good Luck!
Dr.Mattar is my surgeon- he is awesome, I love him!

How many days were you on the liquid diet before surgery?

Hello! I had my surgery done at Clarian North and when you go to your pre-op seminar (about 2 weeks before surgery) you will get a binder that breaks down everything you can have/can't have..it even has a grocery shopping list for each stage! I lived by my binder during the first two stages! You will be on full liquids for week 1 and Puree foods for week 2-3 (actually until post-op day 21) then you will move onto soft foods until post-op week 8 where you are released to eat "regular food". The seminar is SO helpful but if you want to stock up, I know in the early days I ate cream soups (98% fat free- NO chunks) in between protein drinks and water. By the time you move onto puree foods you will want to get out of the house and start walking around. I went grocery shopping post op day 4 with no pain meds just to get out of the house! Good Luck and you will love the Clarian North staff! OH...and don't forget the gas relief meds!!!

I have to agree the staff at Clarion is awesome. A couple of suggestions: go to Walmart and buy the little plastic baby food storage bowls. They are about 5-6 ounce capacity. I use mine everyday. Also indispensible: baby spoons! I bought two 3-pack long-handled baby spoons. They keep you from taking too big of a bite of food.
