Dr Jones- lap band?
Thanks so much, Peggy. My brother-in-law is being banded on Mar 25th, and he is telling me pros and cons of both surgeries. I already know what they are, but he's making the rny sound so bad, I'm worried now. I am in my 5th month of a supervised diet program for insurance requirements. Anyhow, now he's got me kind of second guessing myself!! So I wondered what kind of a predicament I mite find myself in if I decide to do the band instead of rny. Dr. Jones is my surgeon and at the seminar she did steer us toward the rny. Uggghhhh, I don't need this right now! Laura
Dr. Jones now does banding as well as RNY. I encourage you to make your decision based on your own research and your knowledge of your relationship with food. That being said, let me share with you my decision - not to sway you one way or another -- but why I made the decision I did. I had about 140 - 150 lbs I wanted to lose. I researched both surgeries extensively and decided that the band just did not have enough of a guarantee of high pound weight loss. I choose the RYN due to that factor. I was up out of bed and walking the hallway within two hours after returning to my post-op room and returned to work in two weeks. I lost 140 lbs and have maintained a 120# loss. I am working on losing that 20 lbs gain. I have gotten lax about following the plan and eating to many carbs. Neither surgery is a magical answer. We will always need to be diligent in managing what we eat. My sister had lap band surgery done a couple of years ago and had perhaps a little more to lose than I did. She has lost about 70 - 80 lbs but has been unable to lose all the weight she had hoped to. She has commented several times she wishes she would have had the RNY.
Again, choose the surgery that you and your surgeon feel is the right surgery for you.

I had lap band 10 years ago by Dr.Jones and now I am back to presurg weight and am having a revision. I know a lot of people who went the RNY route at the same time and they are doing great and have not gained the weight back. I agree with Peggy the decision is up to you. Don't let others talk you into doing something you don't want to do.

I was at my support group the other nite and the leader asked how many would do the rny over again? Nearly all said they would, with the exception of one woman who was 2 months out. After much discussion, it was obvious she was in a grieving period of missing foods she used to eat. And another lady told her it was normal, that she herself had gone thru it, and it would get better. But it really scared me because even now, presurgery, I find myself grieving and afraid about not eating as I do now. It literally brings me to tears. But, on the other hand, I know I must have this surgery for a longer life. It's just scary and I'm sure you can all relate to feeling like this at times before your surgery date. And, I also know that it's more likely you will lose all your weight with the rny and with the lap band only a percentage. I've made my decision, but still get scared and worried. I believe God has a plan for me and He knows what it is. What is supposed to happen will happen. So I try not to worry and tell myself to just go with the flow. Thank you all for your advice!!! Sincerely, Laura
