To those that have traveled this path I would like to know how your experience happened.
About how long did it take from the time your doctor declared you to the time you were able to receive benefits . . . on and on
Unfortunately, I may have to go this way and I am a wee bit scared. Any insight you could provide would help take the edge off.
Thanks,
Crystal

My last day of work was in July of 06 for my severe Asthma and respirtory issues.. I was told I'd never qualify though so never applied... October of 08 I was diagnosed with severe depression and a couple other diagnoses all of which I struggled with since being out of work. in March of 09 I was an idiot and overdosed on pills and the social worker, my therapist, and psychiatrist at the time all recommended I file for disability for my mental illness (was diagnosed with bipolar by this time.) I filed the end of March, got my first check in May and got 6 months back pay and it said I was officially declared disable in April of 08.
I plan on using this to go back to school though as soon as I get healthy through their program and beginning a new career.

Crystal;
I work for the state in Vocational Rehabilitation. We help people with disabilities return to work. Most people I have meet over the years have not gotten disability very quickly or easily. If you're denied the first time, you will have to appeal, and might wait up to 2 years for an appeal date (date, not decision).
If you might still be able to work with some accommodations, you might try your local VR office. We help people who are working to maintain employment also.
