caffeine question?
I was told to try to kick the caffeine habit prior to surgery but I really want to have regular coffee with my sweetie in the morning. Has anyone had a problem with it upseting their system / or with headaches because of consuming it daily. I used to drink about 3 cups of coffee a morning. Decaff is not cutting it.
Christina,
You're told to kick the caffiene habit prior to surgery because:
(1) if you drink it post-op, it can cause ulcers. Trust me, it happened to me, No fun. And that was from having 1/2 cup one time.
(2) caffiene withdrawel often causes people to have headaches, etc. You are going to be trying to recoup from your tummy being operated on. The last thing you need is a headache to top it off.
(3) caffiene can cause a person to dehydrate. It is a battle for many people to stay hydrated post-op. When you drink a caffinated beverage (coffee or pop...even diet pop), you are actually subtracting the amount of liquid available for your body to function. I was told that for every ounce of caffiene I had, I would have to drink 2 ounces of water just to counter it's effects. When I was newly post-op it was a struggle just to get in the 64 oz of water I was suppose to get it. Add 16 oz to it just so I could have an 8 oz cup of coffee? Couldn't do it.
That said, are there people who drink full leaded coffee post-op? Yes. Do all of them get ulcers or dehydrated? No. Do you want to risk it? I use to drink coffee all day long. We're talking 2-3 pots for just me. So...I certainly didn't think 1/2 cup would hurt me. It did, big time.

My sister had the same issue as Sherri after drinking regular coffee post-op. She drank it each morning with her husband and son. After about 3 months... she had an ulcer.
I suggest you find a way to tolerate the decaf. You are gonna find that you will have to comprise many things in your life with this surgery. You MUST find a way that you can substitute with something you can enjoy. Maybe it is not even coffee.
You need to really get in the mindset that this surgery requires. You will have lots of things you can no longer enjoy post op but you have to realize there is a whole new world of things out there for you as well. Giving up donuts was hard for me but I decided that looking in the mirror and seeing a thinner me was worth it. And now, I would rather jog with my son than have a donut any day!!!!
Take up doing puzzle books or crocheting while your hubby has coffee. You can have a protein shake and still enjoy his company.
Otherwise, decaf must become your friend. LOL..... btw, decaf isnt even total caffiene free from what I understand.
Best of luck to you and I am glad you are thinking things over.
Huge hugz,
Tracy

Thank you both for your feedback on this question. I do not want to get an ulcer, and I went through the awful headaches the first time and it was dreadful. I do believe decaf will become my new best friend! My journey has been problem free so far and I will do everything to keep it that way. Thanks again !!
