Hey there, I am a clarian employee as well and had surgery with Dr. Mattar 9 months ago in April for RNY.  There is a 3 month supervised weight loss period that Clarian Bariatric and Dr. Mattar require, not necessarily your insurance co.  I had the Anthem Blue Access PPO last yr and they had no weight loss requirement but Dr. Mattar himself did require that I lose 20 pounds prior to surgery.  My starting BMI was 45, it is now 22.   I love Dr. Mattar and would do it all over again in a heartbeat!!

Thank you for the input.  I am having a sleep apnea test tonight and will see Dr Mattar on 2-1.  My starting BMI is about 38.

Thanks!

I am 2 weeks out today and he was my doctor. I love, love, love him and his staff. He is so great at what he does that his nurse said to my family that other surgeons recommend him allthe time, and that people come from all over to have him. I am so pleased with what he has done for me. I lost 11 pounds the first week,no problems with feeling bad,and actually going back to work on Monday.I was really healthy when I was being looked at and had all my pre-op work done. The only thing wrong was my thyroid leval was low. I was told to lose 10 pounds and to keep it off. I weighed 262 on my seminar day,I weighed in at 223 the day of surgery. I weighrd 218 a week after surgery. The waiting period they told you was really accurate and it is hard to wait, but it goes by really fast. It will definatly be a great tool for you to use to help you on your journey.I would just do all they say and follow the diet he puts you on really closly;you will see the pounds melt off of you if you follow it right.Have support and trust Dr. Mattar he is great!

 Hi,

Thanks for the information.  I had to reschedule my app't for 3/1 as I had been pretty ill my app't day.

I am still going to go, but probably won't get approved as my bmi is less than 40 and my cardiologist said I do not have any co-mobidities.  So I am pretty discouraged, but thought maybe they could help me with a diet or something.

Congrats on your success!

Lynn,
Do not get discouraged. I had no co-mobidities,and I was one of my doctors healthiest paitents. My B.M.I was a 36 when I went in to surgery. I think the only thing that I had on my side was a family history of sugar and heart disease. They do have a great diet plan, but If you really want the surgery try to have them work for you. They are majical in that department. If you happen to get denied than it is for a reason, and the diet plan they have will also be very helpful!! I hope you get to feeling better! Good luck and keep me posted on your journey

Christina.

Wow - you got approved without co-mobidities?  That is great.  It makes me hopeful.  I have BCBS Fed employees plan - which I have heard is pretty good, so I hope I can do it.  I did have a  heart rhythm problem in December, was able to stop medication this month, have hypothyroid, migraines and plantar fasciitis - but doubt those problems would do anything.   If I would get approved, I think I would like the sleeve instead of the RNY or lapband.

Thanks again!

Hello, I just went to seminar at St. Vincent with Dr. Inman, I am considering going to see Dr. Mattar, only because Dr. Inman uses a bougie size 40, I think its too big for me.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT SIZE BOUGIE DR MATTAR USES?
AND DOES HE OVERSEW THE STAPLE LINE?????
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP....GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

I am not sure if I want to know now but what is a bougie? And am I going to regret not knowing this prior to my surgery?

A bougie is the size of instrument dr uses to guide the size of your new stomach. The sizes vary from 32 to 60. I am told there is not much difference from 32 to 38. I am concerned to get too big of one and resulting in dr not cutting out the fundus/gherlin (this produces the hormone that makes you hungry) which I would think would affect long term loss. hope this helps. Good luck
