Small bumps in the road.

Yesterday was a bad day for me.  I was doing good until I had my second meal.  I ate 1 1/2 ozs of cottage cheese and I felt extremely bloated.  I couldn't drink or eat.  I later tried to take some gas x and that made it worse.  I ended up taking some antinausea meds and waited it out.  About 9p things started getting better and I was able to eat 1 oz of pudding.  I think I will stay away from cottage cheese for another week and not eat over an oz for some time.  Other than that my pain level is minimal.  If I lay wrong it hurts, but otherwise pretty good.  Not taking pain meds.  Today started off much better.  However I am passing some mucus type blood clots when I pee.  Nurse said to keep an eye on it and if it gets worse to let them know.  They think it may just be due to trauma from the catheter.  So lets hope the rest of the day is smooth sailing.  Did anyone have this happen to them?  I have had a hysterectomy so it is not period type blood. Hope everyone is having a great New Year.

Hi Sherry  - congrats on getting thru the surgery.

I'm a bit surprised that you're on to food already being less than 1 week post op.  I think I was on liquids for at least 2 weeks and then went to the pureed foods.

Get some Isopure - (large glass bottles have 40 grams of protein) as this counts towards your liquid and protein requirements.  This and Unjury shakes were my main food at the begnning......and now 2 1/2 years out I still keep Unjury around for those days I'm running short on protein.

Work your way into food slowly.  I think i lived on quarter cups of refried beans, ricotta and cottage cheese for another few weeks before I got into other foods.  Unless it's a special puddding probably not much protein in there and thus you're better off with a protein shake......you're still recovering and your body needs the protein to heal.

I didn't have any cathetar problems, so I can't offer any advice there.

Congrats again.  You should be feeling better soon!

We are all so different especially early out its hard to compare experiences with food.  I think the best thing to do is try only one new food per day, then you can weed out what is not working for you and not try it again for a couple months.  Even then some things will work today and not work tomorrow its all just pretty much trial and error.

As far as eating this early out, my surgeon also had us eating small amounts of soft foods before we left the hospital.  If I remember correctly I had cream of chicken soup, oatmeal and applesauce before I left the hospital.

I have heard lots of raves from the people here on the boards who put protein powder in their sf puddings and make it like a cake batter???  I can't vouge for that because like I said I couldn't do the puddings.

I have no advise on the cathetar, hope that clears up for you soon though.

i know all docs and plans are different but i was on liquids for 2 weeks than soft liquids for another 2..
the cottage cheese kinda surprises me and the 1 1/2 oz also surprises me too
there would have been no way i could have done that much such a short time after my surgery
hope things get better for ya
congrats on your surgery!

Hey Pam,

I have been trying to view your page in the hopes to add you, but it is not working. I am going to have the surgery done by the same surgeon. :) The moment she walked in the room, I knew I was in the right place. She made me feel so at ease. I would love to hear about your experiences.

Sorry sweetie.. I am with everyone else... liquids for a while.. I couldnt handle all the protien so I drank ALOT of milk and didnt even worry about "meals" ( for once in my life I didnt care if I ate a meal) Its boring I know but your liquids are soooo important early off because we can dehydrate so easily! Even after 5 years I have to make sure I get my liquids. I promise after 6 weeks or so you will start living normally.. (so to speak) anyway it WILL get better.. and just think of all the pounds dropping off!!
