Hi Sandi - glad to know i'm not the only newbie!

To answer your questions - I'm in Evansville.... and i haven't had surgery yet.  I was approved on thursday of last week after 6 months of dr supervised weightloss... and I am having RNY.  I meet with my surgeon on the 23rd of this month and i will schedule at that time.  To be honest, it didn't feel real until i got the approval - and so now the excited/nervous/fear feelings are hitting!

LOL!  i saw your posts when i was on earlier - glad your son is doing well!

I'm approved, and waiting to be schedule for RNY.... i've done lots of research, but i'm still taking suggestions on helpful books, web sites, blogs, things to do pre-op.... and recommendations on the fun stuff like vitamins and protein powders.  Or where to get cheap clothes (although my closet hosts a range of sizes from 14-22 (got rid of the 24s) so i've at least got a start.  I can't seem to find much info any local clothing swaps, and the bariatric center (St. Mary's BC) didn't have the space to store the support group clothing swap anymore.

Thanks for you're warm welcome!

1 sugestion.. everyone says take chapstick to the hospital.. The nurse tonight said NO Chapstick has petroleum and that reacts to the oxygen you are on. the respertory therapist said no.. get something like Blistex with no petroleum for your dry lips..

Every 3 months we have a clothing exchange in Indy for post ops...keep an eye on here the next might be in jan if the weather and the babies that are due make it possible...

MY suggestion is start taking your Biotin now to protect  your hair loss but there are differences of opinion on that one.

Goodwill... 1/2 price days!! YEE HAW!!!

Thanks for all the info!!!

I am a bit scared of the hair loss... which is a bit vain, but the strawberry blond is from my mom... and i'd kinda like to keep it!

Becky,

Nice to put a name with that lovely smile! LOL!

Congrats on the approval. That seems to be the hardest part of this journey for many. You also found you way to us so you have found one of the best sites for information & support that is out there. You may find SparkPeople.com also useful to track your eating, drinking, and exercise. It's a very informative site..but not about weight-loss surgeries...just general health and non-surgical weight loss.

Most dieticians and/or surgeons don't even mention the B vitamin Biotin until you've already had tons of hair to fall out. Some saythat it didn't do much for them. For me? As many surgeries as I've had to have since my RNY 5+ years ago, I'd be bald if I didn't take it. So...get a jump on it and start it now. Get the tablet form. You want to make sure that whatever you take, that it can dissolve in water since once you are post-op, you won't have your stomach acids to help it dissolve anymore. (you'll have them..the pills & food just never comes in contact with it). They usually recomend 3 chewable childrens complete vitamins a day, 3 calcium citrate (not carbonate), B12 sublingual 1-2 times a week, B1 once a week. I'd also recomend vitamin D daily.

Our taste buds differ widely from person to person. They will also change greatly as you go through your journey. So...whatever protein you decide to try, buy small. Don't even bother taste testing any of it pre-op. What you like today may taste horrible post-op. And what tastes great post-op, you may not be able to stand 2 weeks later.

Some of the profiles on here can give you a little bit more insight and tips. Feel free to browse through them.
