The Kroger at 38th and Moller on the westside is going out of business.  Their last day is Saturday.

All items are 50% off - housewares are 75% off.  Do NOT go in the evening.  It's not a good or safe area.  Take someone with you.

I went at lunchtime with a girlfriend.  I had a cart heaped full that totalled over $390, and spent only $180 for it.  I cleaned them out of SF sweet pickles, SF Jello pudding, SF Smucker's Red Raspberry Jam.  I got a bunch of Newman's salsa, some SF Klondike bars, Kettle Corn, and a bunch of other stuff.

They have no perishables, milk, meat, or eggs left, and not a lot of frozen food left either.  They do have salad dressings, condiments, hair color, some shampoo, and cosmetics.  They also have cat and dog food.

When the Kroger at 38th & Post went out of business, I stocked up big time on decaf coffee, decaf tea, splenda, olive oil, and canola oil! It'll be quite awhile before I have to buy any of those! The employees there said that the reason they were going out of business was because it was robbed too often and it got to expensive to have to keep sending their managers to court. That's pretty bad when you can't even keep a national chain grocery store in business not because the sales are too low but because the crime rate is too high in that particular area. I would bet that the one at 38th & Moller is closing it's doors for the same reason. I guess the Walmart Neighborhood stores are going to get the customers just by default..it's the only local place to go to. Well...there are a few other grocery stores that are close..but not safe to go to even in broad daylight!

Sherri it is so sad for me to hear of my old stomping grounds going to hell like that.  We still own our house over at 10th and Franklin, and it still feels like home to me, makes me sick to my stomach.  Some days I would love to sale this house and go back "home" where the bills were more manageable and the house was darn near paid off and then I hear stories such as a Kroger closing because of theft and think "maybe not".  Since I have an impressionable teenage boy still at home I have to consider that too.  His high school here has under 400 kids, at Warren more like 4,000 thats a lot of different personalities to keep up with lol.

Jeannie,

The Kroger at 10th & Shortridge/Shadeland is still open. Every time I go in there, it's customers are a totally different class of people than what I saw going into the one at 38th & Post. My MIL lived near 10th & Shadeland and didn't have any problems. Warren is alot bigger school than the one your son goes to now, but...it is much better than the IPS schools on the east side.

The neighborhood we live in (near 38th & Richardt) was a nice quiet subdivision when I first met Bill 10 years ago and we'd go over and visit his mom when she lived in the house we live in now. Since we've lived there (Sept 2004), I have really seen the neighborhood go down. Our block has more renters than home owners now. Nothing against renters..but most of them just don't care about the upkeep of a home/yard when they don't own it themself. We kinda have a fued thing going on right now because the woman (Cynthia) accross the street doesn't want ANYONE to park in front of our house because she thinks that should be reserved for HER company (but keep in front of her house clear of vehicles and only have 1 car parked in their driveway that is big enough for 4 cars). There is enough room there for 2 cars but her son will park right smack in the middle so Tiffany has no where to park on the occasions she comes over. Cynthis also doesn't think we (we as in white people..not we as in me & Bill) have the right to have a new vehicle (even though Bill is a retired electrician and I've been at Lilly's for 20.5 years) and if we have a vehicle there are certain color of vehicles that we should not own. When we got the Kia, we found out that white people weren't suppose to have a black vehicle. Hmmmm..news to me..????? The neighbor to the left of her found out that white people weren't suppose to buy red trucks either. Okay.....   Now she has a buddy to help champion her cause..the new renters on our side of the street. To apease Cynthia, we parked the RV just to the right of our drive. Although that was fine with the owner of that house and with the renters who lived there before, with Cynthia's nudging, it's not alright with these new renters...so..they called the tow truck to come and get it and said it was abandoned! It was plugged into our house!!! It's plates are up to date. It's insured. It screams not abandoned! So..while I was at work yesterday, my legally BLIND husband had to drive the 35 foot RV around the block so that it wouldn't be towed!! As soon as he pulled out, she moved her car into that spot...which leaves enough room between her car and her driveway for 2 RV's! The RV is now blocking half of our drive so I had to park in the street last night. So..the RV is going back in front of our house today...which will **** off Cynthia and I suppose we'll have the tow truck called by her next. Heck of it is, we have done nothing to either of these people. I could not even tell you what the new neighbors look like! I could tell you what their kids look like since their mother told them it was ok to play in my raised cement-lined herb gardens that is extremely NOT kid friendly or on our front stoop! I can also tell you what their pit bull looks like.

All that to say this...you never know about a neighborhood. What is good today, might not be tomorrow. If those renters got kicked out and someone decent moved in, Cynthia won't have a buddy to work with and this BS will quieten down. Can you tell that is what I'm hoping for? All you can do is deal with whatever happens as it happens. I do know though that if Bill had gotten into a wreck going around the block, that woman next door would had wished she'd never picked up the phone to call Last Chance Wreckers! So would had Last Chance Wreckers!

Huggs...
Sherri

Wow..your story just caused me to have a flashback lol.

When me and hubby were first married we lived next door to "cynthia".  I parked in front of their house long enough for two of my kids to run indoors and put on swimsuits only to look out and see them pushing my car down the street with their car.  Its 25 years later and I still fail to see the humor.

I worked in the special education department of Warren for a few years when my son was small.  I was at the Early Childhood center and then one of the middle schools for a bit.  Its a good school system, or at least it was especially for elementary education.  My son did very well and was in accelerated classes at Warren.  Its just a very large school and somehow my son just became sort of lost when he started middle school.
