If you still have today's Martinsville newspaper, would it be possible for you to save it for me?  My father in law's obituary should have been in today - Floyd E. Smith.  Thanks!!!  You have to pay to see it online...,

Christie, I'm not jeannie, but just wanted to say how horrible I think it is that they want to charge some one to look at an obituary. Crazy.

Melissa, if you think that's bad, you should see what they charge to publish the obituaries!  That blew me away.  The Indianapolis Star charges $150 for 17 lines, and Martinsville charges $60.  That total is added in to the funeral bill.  When we got those charges, we decided to forget about putting it in the newspaper in Brooklyn NY where he worked and lived for so many years (and where my DH was born).

Christie I will make sure and pick up a paper for you first thing this morning.  We have a paper box right out front of work.  I really was shocked to find out how much it cost to publish an obit when my pap passed in March.  I thought it was a courtesy (silly me).  Then in every paper they refered to him as "her" ugh.
The Martinsville paper just started charging to view it online its like $6 a month.  Bloomington has charged for probably three years that I know of.  It is becoming very common place because people are canceling their subscriptions and viewing the paper online.  We can see the employment ads and the yard sale ads still online.

Thank you so much!!  When things settle down, I'll see about meeting up somewhere to pick them up.

The funeral home didn't supply you with copies of the paper? When my mil passed away, they gave us 10 copies or so.

Sherri - no they didn't.  I printed off the one from the Indy Star online, but can't access Martinsville's without paying.  Cheaper to pay Jeannie to get the paper for me!

I'd never been to a military honors funeral before.  After the flag was presented to my MIL, as the only son Wally was presented with the spent shells from the 21 gun salute.  That was so thoughtful, and a nice keepsake for them.
