I'm new here and have a few questions.. My surgery date is 4/12....
Is it normal to start thinking you're doing the right thing?? I enjoy eating a wendy' or having chili once in awhile. I love to cook and know i'll miss that..
How hard is it to live by the clock during the day 1/2 hr by1/2 hr...

I eat at wendy's and eat chili all the time. Its a great source of protein and there are some great awesome cooks on these boards! Its just knowing what you can and can't have and the portion control aspect of it, too. Its hard in the beginning, i am not gonna lie but you get used to it. you have decide do i love myself or food more! Good Luck

Only you can decide if you are doing the right thing. We can't tell you. I know for me? It was the right thing. I no longer am pre-diabetic, have high blood pressure uncontrolled by 3 meds, and have sleep apnea. I can walk my dog without groaning under the weight hurting my feet. I can do and have tried so many things I couldn't and didn't before, such as horseback riding, tap dancing, and weight lifting. For me these things were worth the trade off.

That being said, you can still cook. You will be the opportunity to experiment with new healthier recipies. You can still enjoy a meal out, with more focus on the people and conversation than gobbling. Good luck in your choice!

Its completely normal to start questioning your decision as your date moves closer...so congrats, your normal!!

You will be fine and your tastes buds will change right along with your new style of eating.  Once your away from the foods that keep you heavy you will not miss them.  It does take hard work and dedication to be successful as the surgery is only a tool and not a magic pill, but you can do it.

Mike, I think everyone who has had surgery has asked themselves if they were doing the right thing before and after surgery. It's a normal emotion. You can still cook, and actually will probably find yourself coming up with some great new healthy recipes you can share with us all. I just went to my first Dinner by Design cooking class last night and plan to keep going. They are giving me new recipes and tools to work with to make foods I can eat and that taste great too.

Hang in there, you will do what is right for you!!

Requestioning if your doing the right thing is totally normal. It's all part of the preop jitters. I can't tell you if it's the right thing for you but for me it was! I can't even imagine where I'd be had I not had surgery.

Mike.....NOW IS the time to question it.  Think long and hard and if you believe you even need to pray about it.  This is a permanent operation, there is no turning back in a few months.  I researched and thought about it for 3 years before I finally asked my doctor for a referral.  That was 3 years ago and it truely has been a blessing.

It was very hard at first trying to stick to a schedule of drinking and eating and getting everything in every day.  Once I wrote down a schedule it was easier to follow.  I mean I wrote down what time I had to do every task including walking and I stuck to it.  I even made myself get up at a certain time so I didn't get off the schedule.
Many of the folks on this board, including myself even had difficulties after the fact but will still tell you it was the right choice for them.  I had to have a second emergency surgery 5 months out but I too would do it all over again if I had to.
For me and my husband, who had it 11 days after I did, there have been nothing but good changes in our lives.  We went through a lot of life changes the same year we our RNY and we would never have gotten through them if we had been carrying all the extra weight.

Go to support group and bring it up.  Talk to your doctor if you need to but whatever you do think, think, think about it.  Only you can make this decision for yourself but just know that everyone on this board will support you no matter what you decide.  Good luck and feel free to contact me or Floyd any time. Floyd can give you the "man's" perspective on it and what it has meant to him for the past 3 years.

Good Luck,

Brenda
