Lizzie, Wow! What a battle just to get to the point you're at right now! Many people would had just gave up on the idea of having a weight loss surgery. I'm so proud of you for not doing that!  Walking seems to be the best exercise for most people. We have a treadmill but I get bored on it. I like walking and seeing the scenery. Malls are terrific during the winter. Drinking water is fantastic. Target for at least 64 oz a day...the more, the better! Help yourself to any non-carbonated, sugar-free, decaf drinks you'd like. Many people are big fans of Crystal Light. Get plenty of protein in! Seafood is one of the highest protein packed meats there is. Just be sure that you prepare it in a healthy way. Baked, grilled, and broiled are excellent methods. If you are going to saute or fry, use canola oil or olive oil. Poultry, then pork (minus the skin & fat) are also good choices. Beef..yumy I know, but it has more fat than the other choices. Dairy can also be an excellent source for protein. Fat-free cottage cheese is one of my favorite dairy choices. Don't totally avoid carbs. Ketosis is caused by lack of carbs. One of it's symptoms is this really yucky taste in your mouth. What happens is that if your body ca't find carbs to burn, it  burns muscle tissue...and we all need all the muscles we can get! My nut had advised me to get a minimum of 100 g per day. At least 30 g of that should be fiber (which is non-digested carbs). The best carbs for you are 'non-white' ones....wheat pasta, sweet potatoes, brown rice, whole wheat bread. SparkPeople.com is an excellent place to assist you. You can set your weight, nutritional, and exercise goals there, log each of those, and educate yourself on each. To lose 1 lb per week, it's recommended that you reduce your daily food intake by 250 calories and do enough exercise to burn 250 calories per day. I would suggest that you first log in everything you do (exercise) and drink/eat for a few days so you can determine what your norm is. Choosing fat-free/low-fat, and sugar-free versions can reduce those daily calorie intakes by quite abit! Be sure you ask your nut for her recommendations for you personally for your daily intake of calories, carbs, fats, and fiber. Oh...it's usually recommended also to get in 10,000 steps a day. No, you won't be able to start off there. It'll take some time to build yourself up to that. I'd recommend your investing in a good pedometer. You can get them at WalMart for about $5...I got mine at CVS for $30...and it's been pretty reliable. Every 2,000 steps is approximately 1 mile...so 5 miles a day is what a 'healthy' person should target for. We're here for you! I'm sure you'll lose those 20 lb in no time! Sherri
