I had trouble with the protein shakes at first as well.  Only thing that really worked was the Isopure mixed with Crystal Lite over ice.  I put it in my sippy cup and sipped it.  It got me through the first few weeks.  St. Vincent's also uses the Carnation SF Instant Breakfast with powered milk and milk for protein drinks.  Have you tried that?  It wasn't to bad but I was lactose intolerant so couldn't use it because of the lactose. I like the Isopure drinks from GNC, I could tolerate the Grape and Fruit Punch the best.  They are a little pricey though.  Lately I've been using No Sugar Added Cranation Instant Breakfast.  They have 5 grams of protein, but adding 8 oz of milk adds 8 grams of protein. I like the Strawberry, I usually make up 16 oz of milk and 2 packets.  Total 26 Grames of Protein.  It doesn't have the after-taste!!  If your grocery doesn't carry No Sugar Added, just ask them to order it. Good Luck, Toni

Welcome to your new world.  This is why we say don't buy any protein until after the surgery.  What you like before you probably won't tolerate after.  I tried ABS protein powder from WalMart before and loved it.  After It made me puke.  I did find the powder from unjury.com was tolerable but it is only available on line.  A little pricey but it is medical grade calcium.  Sure don't want any calcium from China.  I think that was what killed pets. Let things come slowly.  As you get farther out things will level out and become easier.   E

LaChelle, So many things with me is texture. Sounds like it may be for you too since it's the 'powder' you can't stand, not the flavor. When I was a newbie, I used the St. V's recipe that Misty gave you. I added about 1/2 pack of sugar-free jello to it. The lemon or lime flavors made it pretty yummy to me. I couldn't handle Carnation Instant Breakfast (CIB) in it at all. After about 6 weeks or so, I became lacotse intollerant toward milk (but not cheese..????). I went through a rough stage trying alot of different protein drinks then. I couldn't stand Isopure. I was able to handle Nectar (BariatricEating.com) for awhile but then my taste buds decided they didn't like it either. I know some people liked the 'bullet'. It's a jell that comes in a tube. But as I said...texture. There was just no way I could convince myself to try to swallow that jell! I had gotten a free one at the OH conference I went to.  I kept it in the fridge for months afterward...and finally threw it away. Now, I really enjoy AchievOnes..but they are pricey and they do contain caffiene (each bottle contains about what you'd get in 1/2 cup of coffee as per the manufacturer...so I also drink a ton of water to make up for any affects the caffiene has). So..it's not really something I would recommend to the new tummy since caffiene can cause ulcers (and it's already hard enough for newbies to get in 64 oz of water without having to add extra to make up for the caffiene). I know...so what do you do???? Many people get through these early stages just by drinking skim milk with or without sugar-free chocolate added to it (Hershey's & Nestle's both have a sf chocolate) and eating string cheese. For any drinks you do try, read the labels carefully. Some of them are packed with calories, fat, and/or sugars. Some also aren't very high on protein content. Sure...10 g might seem like alot of protein..but...8 oz of skim milk has 8 grams and less calories. I wasn't too impressed with the protein waters out there either..not when you look at the calorie & protein content. Just not enough protein there to make it worth the calories to me. So be very diligent on checking the labels to be sure you are getting in as much protein per calorie as possible. Once you can start eating more variety, this protein issue will be a thing of the past...especially if you like seafood! When you can start eating canned meats, tuna & crab are excellent, high protein choices. In the meantime...skim milk & string cheese may be your best bet. Sherri

Thanks everyone for all the tips and replies and PMs......I am drinking the milk just fine.  I decided to only make a glass at a time, and it is just perfect........16 grams in one glass! and It tastes great too! I didn't even have to add any flavorings to it, since I like the taste of plain milk.  All I need is to drink 4 glasses a day and I am set! HEHE   Thanks again everyone! I knew I would be able to get the answers I needed from you all!!!  You guys ROCK!!!!!

LaChelle,

After 2 weeks post-op I couldn't tolerate any of the protein drinks.  I got all mine by drinking double strength skim  milk (16 oz skim milk plus 1/3 cup powdered milk (total of 24 grams of protein)) mixed with a teaspoon of sugar free Nesquik.  2 per day gave me 48 grams of protein plus whatever I could get in by way of meats. Goodluck.  Just remember that this too shall pass.  It will get easier.
