Hi, gang! I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Alisha, a 28 year old Ph.D. student at Purdue. I'm finally settling into my "adult" life after spending way too many years in school. In the past year, I've bought a house, started my phd, and decided to finally look into weight loss surgery. After a lot of soul searching and finding out I was covered by insurance, I took the leap. I just received my surgery date, and I don't think that I have been this excited to start a new endeavor in my whole life. Not prom, not moving away to college, not initiating in my sorority, not getting into grad school when i didn't have much of a shot, and not buying my first house. March 25th is the first day of a whole new way of life. I can't wait to start doing all those things that I can't do now. Airplanes and sporting events and theaters and amusement parks and *gasp* shopping for clothes somewhere other than Lane Bryant!!! I appreciate any tips that you can give me as I start this new journey. I'm looking forward to sharing it with you.

Good Luck.  It sounds like you are getting your life in order.  Congratulations!  The time will fly by getting ready for the "date."  I had mine May 07 and NEVER regretted it for one moment.  You will feel better, healthier, younger etc in no time and yes, all those things you mentioned (e.g. plane seats, sporting events, amusement rides etc) will soon be in your life!!!!  So many WOW moments to come!!!  Keep us posted!!! Welcome.   You are on a rollercoaster with school for sure. You have made a good choice with surgery you will gain more energy then you can imagine. E

Congratulations on your big day that will be here in no time. You will never regret this choice that you made. You have many accomplishments to your credit and should be very proud of all of them.

Alisha, Welcome to the board. Congrats on so many things. You are in a wonderful position in life and it is terrific to see a young person take such good control over their life's path. This board can help you as you take the weight loss surgery journey. Feel free to ask any questions you may have. This is a very supportive group of people and we welcome any questions you may have!  I have a section on my profile that is for those who are pre-op as well as those who are post-op. You may benefit from reading it. I hope so anyway. The profiles of others may benefit you as well. Sometimes, just reading what others have shared will help you to understand more about the journey you are about to embark on. Please feel free to participate on the board..and off of it. We enjoy each other's company and try to socialize whenever we can. We're having a cloting exchange this Saturday. You are welcome to join us. Sherri

Alisha, You sound like a very bright, ambitious young lady.  Congratulations on your accomplishments thus far.  Also, kudos to you for taking this next leap of faith.  Your surgery is scheduled on my birthday!  I had my RNY on October 26 and it's the best thing I've done for myself and my family.   Take advantage of the experience on the Indiana board.  You'll discover a lot of things here you won't find anywhere else.  These folks have been the best support group I've ever found.  Visit often.  Ask questions.  Vent fears and frustrations.  Someone here has experienced it. Good luck and God bless. Jacqui

Thank you all so much for your support. It really means a lot to me. I've finally started sharing my news with the rest of the world, so to speak. My family is overjoyed. They've seen what a change it has made for my aunt, and they can't wait for me to experience it as well. I'm meeting some resistance though with half of my friends. Some are like my family, but others are very negative. It's the negative ones that are really bothering me. They just keep bringing up all the things that can go wrong. Yes, I'm very aware that bad things can happen. Lucie's loss today is just such an example. But, two and a half years ago, I almost lost my life to blood clots in my heart and lungs. The doctors said I was about six heartbeats from death had one of those in my heart dislodged. Nothing can beat that. If I can go through that...If I can survive that, I can do anything. I know I run the risk of another clot, and things may go wrong during the surgery or healing process. I just think that I was left on earth for a purpose that I haven't yet accomplished. I see this surgery, this life changing event, to be another step on the path to that purpose. If they can't support me and my decision, I'm very, very glad that I can find a group of people who do. I would love to make it to the exchange, but I have a going-away party to attend that day. Are any other events coming up? And thanks for the insight, I'll start looking up people's profiles. I had thought about starting a blog as well. Just to keep my thoughts in a row.
