Im at work tonight and need some info.  We just admitted a pt that had an open RNY and I need to know what the latest vitamin recommendations are.  Shes from OK and has had no contact with her surgeon in yrs and needs some Vitamins NOW.  Iknow waht I take but I think a few things have changed since I got my sheet 2 yrs ago.  Can someone tell me what all St. V's is suggesting >>>Multi Vitamin, B 12, Calcium B1, and how much of these, how often u are to take them and any others u can think of.

Thanks

THANK GOD you are there and know what you are doing!!! so m any hospitals just dont know how we eat or what is important!!! I had to argue with a NUT when they did my knee when I told her I just couldnt eat everything she was sending!! You will be a good support system for her while she recovers.. Linda Kay

While I was at Seton Rehab, I argued with every new nurse I had. They kept wanting me to drink THEIR protein drinks instead of my own..Mine is 120cal and 20 g of protein and NO sugar. Theirs was 320 cal, 8 g of protein and 16 g of sugar!! They wanted me to do theirs 3 times a day! No way was I putting that crap in me! I explained that to the nut on staff and she agreed that it was fine for me to have mine instead..but she never took the order off my chart so...every time I'd get a different nurse the first time, I would have to go through the 'this label says..and this label is...' to convince them. And my vitamins while I was in there? Yeah, right! Na-da! They even had my synthroid all screwed up, as well as my estrogen.  I'm sure my body is very happy to be getting a steady supply of everything again! And yep...all of that was on the list of daily meds. But then...St. V's didn't give me any of this either ..or at least not the proper dose. Sherri

When we go to to St. V's for an issue are we supposed to take our own vitamins ??? I've always wondered this because the times I've been admitted I've never been given a vitamin at all. A couple times it didn't matter because I had TPN but I just was wondering.

Pamela, I got my book out and copied the yellow sheet about the vitiamin supplementation and am posting that portion. I know your post was a couple days old but hope this will help.  I understand that some of the guidelines are changing in a few days. Because part of your intestine has been bypassed and you are eating significantly smaller amounts of food, vitamin supplementation is crucial following surgery. You will require vitamin supplementation for the rest of your life. Also, you will no longer be able to absorb vitamin B12 if taken by mouth. Failure to take your vitamins can lead to serious deficiencies and ill health. Failure to take a B12 supplement can lead to pernicious anemia and possibly nerve damage. B12 can be found in a sublingual form (taken under the tongue). B12 injections are an alternative to sublingual B12 and will need to be provided by your family physician. If you are unable to locate a sublingual product your surgeon may wish to prescribe a medication in capsule or nasal spray forms. It is also critical to supplement with calcium and a multivitamin containing iron.

3 CHILDREN'S CHEWABLE COMPLETE MULTTVITAMINS DAILY

OR 3 CENTRUM ADULT CHEWABLES DAILY

1500 MG CALCIUM CITRATE DAILY

1000 MCG SUBLINGUAL B12 WEEKLY

OR B12 INJECTION MONTHLY

100 MG THIAMIN (VITAMIN Bl) WEEKLY * AVOID TAKING MULTIVITAMIN AND CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTS AT THE SAME TIME.

Thank you Sue and Vicki

That was exactly what I needed and the timing was perfect.  I just posted this last night and when I came in tonight my answers were here.  The dr doesnt come in until Monday.  Now I can have all this waiting for him, plus I already had a copy of the diet in his book of things to do!

See you all next Sat!
