Some new foods I've discovered

I know most of you have already discovered these foods but as a 9 weeker, anything new is wonderful!  I thought I'd share just in case there are others who are searching like me.

Breakfast has been my downfall.  I don't have time to fix eggs every morning.  Also, I have developed an aversion to them.  I had it bad when I was pregnant and it's returned.  The look and smell of them make me sick.  I bought some sugar free oatmeal at Wal-Mart.  It's maple sugar flavored and it's really good.  It's Wal-Mart brand too so it's pretty cheap.  I've also just found a yogurt that I can tolerate.  It's Blue Bunny Lite No Sugar Added Peach Passion.  It's in 4 oz cups and I can eat the whole thing!  It's not so cheap but worth the money. A couple of dinner ideas I've tried this week are Hamburger Helper Potato Stroganoff and a spaghetti type dish I had last night.  I use 97% FF ground turkey in the Hamburger Helper.  I can only eat about 2 ozs of it but it was a nice change.  The spaghetti stuff was GREAT though.  My daughter wanted me to fix some spaghetti so I looked at all the sauces and found one with 6 sugars per serving.  I think it was Ragu Lite.  I fixed it with some ground turkey and onion powder.  Of course I put the sauce on pasta for Troy and Luci.  For me I sauteed some yellow summer squash until it was soft and put the sauce over it.  It was soooo yummy!  Troy even mixed some of the squash in his dinner.  The flavors really complemented each other.  I brought some left overs for lunch today.  It's definitely something I'll do again. As for beverages:  water, water and more water.  I have found that the SF Minute Maid Orangeade is pretty darn tasty though. Hope this helps those looking for new foods.  It's made me very happy! Please post other ideas if you have them! Smooches, Jacqui

Jacqui, I know how wonderful it is to introduce new foods but be really careful. especially with tomato sauces. They are high in acids and can irritate your new pouch and have been linked to ulcers in new pouches that are healing sill. I kept religiously to the yellow sheets from St. V's. I only added the new foods as the sheets permitted me to. It isn't about wether or not you can tolerate a new food but rather if you are allowed to introduce it yet. I don't mean to rain on your parade :o) but being a baby pouch you don't want any problems. For great flavor I loved the refried beens with cheese and sour cream at your stage. You can even order out at Taco Bell their pinto beans and cheese and they are soooooo wonderful!  Hang in there sweetie you are doing wonderful! Hugs! Marianne

I agree with Maryanne be careful.  It is about new foods that are fresh and whole grains.  Don't slip back into box foods and sauces.  Make your own.  Buy whole grain, get your family on board the new food choices it will be good for them.  It is easy for them to drag you back to foods that cause problems.   Becky now can not eat anything with sugar in it now because she has allowed me to still be the cook and I don't use sugars white flour or anything that comes from a can. I try to buy frozen vegtables, fresh fruit, whole grain, Rotini whole grain pasta is good, and etc. I will buy low sodium Red Gold tomato chuncks because the fresh tomato taste like cardboard this time of year and I am 9 months out. Please I am not scolding you just in a loving way trying to give you a gentle nuge. E

Jacqui, Congrats on feeling well enough to try new foods!! But...I have to agree with the others, be very careful when trying out new things...especially if it isn't on the yellow sheets...but even if it is as well. I'm one of the ones who did get an ulcer from tomato-based products. Ouchie! I didn't feel any pain at all until about a week after I thought I had ketup successfully. Orange juice caused a 2nd one. Both were on my 'allow' list at the time when I tried them. I just recently had the nerve to try OJ again. Ketup was ok after about 6 months for me. My pouch was just pickier than the yellow sheet was. When you do try out new things, be very diligent about reading the labels. I'm not as much of a cook as E is...so I don't make my own ___ instead of buying it made when I can..so..I very carefully read the labels. Breakfast is my worse meal also. I have tried the sf oatmeal from WalMart (have a few boxes in my cabinet even). They only have 4 g of protein and 18 g of carbs per package. I prefer to go with a  lower carbs & higher protein combo of fat-free cottage cheese with some sf fruit ****tail added in it. When I do have the oatmeal..now remember, I'm +3 yr out so I'm at 8-12 oz per meal allowable (when I can eat that much)...I have one pack of it plus some string cheese or something else packed with protein. I target ~100 g of carbs in a day. Less than that, I go into ketosis. More than that, the carbs effect my weight. I also try to pack in the protein whenever I can. For me personally, I stay away from the 'helpers'..too many calories & carbs in them (alot due to the white pasta's used). Also, the longer you can go without hamburger, the better. Beef is one of the highest fat content meats. Go with ground turkey instead. Even better yet, stick to fish & poultry as much as possible. Bill got me the Deceptively Delicious cookbook for Christmas. Jerry Seinfeld's wife authored it. She sneaks veggies into her kids by making veggie purees and adding some of it to their favorite foods...like butternut squash puree added to mac & cheese in place of some of the butter & milk. The kids never even detect it's there. She also adds pureed beets to spaghetti, etc. Your kids probably would have loved the squash added to their spaghetti..if they didn't know it was there..lol. You may want to pick up the book for yourself & for your family. Good luck finding foods that liven up your taste buds without causing your pouch to panic and I think you are doing terrific!
