When to get a second opinion??

Ok, I have been having some major pain in my right side (no gallbladder, so that isnt the problem), and my surgeon (Who I respect 110%) did a procedure on last Wednesday, and discovered I had an ulcer, and some scar tissue build up.  Over the weekend, I started having the exact same pain, and I called. They refered me to my family doctor, which is something they rarely do. I questioned how an ulcer in the pouch could cause pain in my mid right side? Thats when the nurse mumbled something about the kidney, and said to call my family dr.  So should I go to the family doctor, or should I seek advise from another bariatric surgeon? I'm so confused.  Any help would be great. Thanks.  S.

Well I think you should see your PCP. You could have a flare up with the ulcer or it could be a kidney infection. Who knows and that's why the surgeon is sending you to see your PCP. Your PCP will probly do blood test to see what's going on. And maybe a urine test too. To see if you have a urine infection. I think your surgeon is right sending you to your family dr.

Scott,

You may want to ask about the posibility of it being an internal hernia. It can hurt in the same way you described. Unless you are in pain right when they do it, a cat scan won't pick it up. I was about a year post op when I had mine. It's also referred to as Kinky Bowel Syndrome. Dr. Gupta, my gastric bypass surgeon is the one who followed up on it...which surprises me that your surgeon isn't.

DEPENDING ON WHERE IN YOUR NEW POUCH THE ULCER IS DEPENDS ON WHERE IT HURTS. I WAS 4 MONTHS OUT AND STARTED HAVING REALLY BAD CHEST PAINS AFTER A TRIP TO THE ER I CALLED MY SURGENS OFFICE AND THEY SET ME FOR A SCOPE AND FOUND I HAD 2 ULCERS RIGHT AT THE TOP OF MY NEW POUCH SO IT WAS HURTING IN MY CHEST. DID THEY GIVE YOU ANYTHING FOR THE ULCERS. I WAS GIVEN CARAFATE(SP) AND PREVIACID AND WOW DOES IT HELP. HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE CHRISTMAS PARTY  GOOD LUCK AND FEEL BETTER SOON VICKI

I'm sorry you are having problems. That is no fun. Dr Mattar was my surgeon and like you I trust him 110%!  He was and still is awesome. I think maybe you should go ahead and call your PCP and see what they have to say. If they determine it is something that is related to your bypass surgery, then call Dr Mattar's office again.  Never hurts to get more then 1 doc involved. Good luck and hope they figure out what's going on soon! Julie
