When can we start eating bread again?  I glanced ahead in my yellow sheets, but dont remember seeing it. I was just curious. Jenny

I don't know exactly when you can have bread--but for some reason I thought that we were told at our initial consultation that there was no bread for the first six months and then only very limited after that.  I am sure someone more knowledgable than me will answer you though.  Missing bread, are you?

I am 2.5 yrs out and I stll shy away from breads..I consider it a waste of room when something better can be eatten. IF You HAVE to have some bread it needs to be VERY toasted so it doesn't swell back up once swallowed.. I even trim the crusts..YEAST breads are the WORST for me.. the taste is soooo satisfing but within seconds it reexpands and then no m ore room left.. and believe me I LOVE MEAT so I dont waste the room on anything as insifgnifigant as bread. Jenny,

I would wait at least a year. I do eat bread now (I'm +3 yr post-op and have been having bread for ~a year now) but I stick to wheat bread and eat the bread that is 35 cal/slice. I do eat toast for breakfast, but will eat it untoasted for a sandwich. Sometimes, I can eat a whole sandwich but usually, just 3/4 of one. Since I introduced bread VERY slowly back into my diet, I haven't had any adverse affects from it. I need to add as well that this few slices of bread is also about the only carbs I get. Because I'm hypoglycemic, I have to avoid potatoes, pasta, corn, peas. Because of my recent problems with diarhea, I have been having rice again but I keep glycine tablets by my side just in case my sugar drops too low from it. You have to get in sufficient carbs (+100g/day per my nut) or you'll go into ketosis. What little bread I have helps me to stay out of ketosis...and stay healthy.

Really, the longer you can wait to have bread, pop, and other things that can cause problems, the better off you'll be. Is it a end-all if you DO have those things? No. Just do it wisely and after a suffiecient amount of time has passed. Since we are all different, only your body can dictate how long that will be for you. Sherri

Jenny, My yellow sheets say bread is for after 12 months out. My sister had her RNY over 7 yrs ago and she still avoids bread and rice.  The procedures have changed a lot since her surgery so it may not be that way for us.  She makes her sandwiches with tortillas and they seem to work better than bread.  She also uses a lot of crackers instead of bread. Guess we'll find out what works for us when we get there!  I always look forward to your posts because you're just a little ahead of me.  I figure I can learn from your mistakes!  LOL! Blessings, jacqui

Thanks all! It's not that I am really craving bread.  I just wanted to have a little bite of toast, but I didnt eat any and its passed now.   Jacqui~~So far I havent really had any problems.  Only thing really was that one day I was feeling real dizzy and I figured I was getting dehydrated, so I just increased my water. I havent had that since.  Every now an then, I drink a little too much and have a little uncomfortable feeling for a few seconds.  I was a big guzzler before surgery so it is very hard to break that and learn to sip. I will keep you posted on any mistakes I make, so you will know....lol! I am sure I will make some. Jenny
