Sugar vs Sugar Alcohol

Ok I have a question for anyone out there that can answer this for me.  I watch my sugar intake very closely.  I will have things that have up to 10 grams of sugar per serving(maybe I should't but I don't dump and I don't have that much on a daily basis) and then you see the  Sugar Alcohol being 5 grams or more.  I have always added them together and if it was over the 10 I wouldn't eat it.  Most of the time I get things that are sugar free but if you look at the label it  will say Sugar 2 grams per serving and 10 grams Sugar Alcohol per serving. Does anyone look at this and should I watch the Sugar Alcohol as well? Thanks  Bonnie

From wikipedia:

However, as for many other incompletely digestible substances (such as dietary fiber), overconsumption of sugar alcohols can lead to bloating, diarrhea and flatulence because they are not absorbed in the small intestine Probably should count and stay away from.  It is a replacement for sugar.  Ask the NUT for a difinitive answer. For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou has done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars.

Sugar alcohol might not make you dump, but too much can give you the runs! I would try not to get too much of it.

Bonnie,

Other than 2 weeks when I had a small melt down a few months ago....I totally stay away from sugar and sugar alcohol.  What I have been told is to watch the ingredient list as well as the nutritional info.  An item may have 2 grams of sugar but they may be all natural sugars like from fruit or milk (which are usually ok) vs added sugars that come from corn syrup ect.  So read you ingredients.  Find out where those 2 grams are coming from.  If they are added sugar or high fructose corn syrup stay away from it.  But like everyone says....ask you dietian!!!

Bonnie,

After I had my surgery about a month out or so I went out of town and was having trouble eating and keeping things down, well I remembered someone saying that DQ had sugar free dilly bars, so I thought that would make me feel better, get something in me etc.  well it is loaded with Alcohol sugars and I dumped big time.  My doc said to stay away from alcohol sugars as well.  Hope this helps somewhat.

I hate sugar alcohol!!! YUCK!  Worse than sugar for me!  Scientifically--anything that is a sugar ends in -ose...glucose, sucrose, lactose, fructose.  An alcohol ends in -ol..mannitol, sorbitol, xylitol, maltito.  A sugar alcohol is typically a sugar with a hydrogan and an oxygen added to it...the alcohol group causes it to be regognized differently by the body.  They don't cause a true dumping--like good old table sugar (sucrose), but the effects are the same.  If you really need to poop...they help.
