I had the RNY on the 15th ....I am still having trouble getting all my fluids in....the only time I am not gassy is when I stand up and walk or when I am lying down. I am still on clear liquids because I had trouble with the protien shake so I am pretty much jello, popsicle (SF), broth, water, milk, (I cant tolerate apple juice), ect... So between meals and waiting and pills and waiting it feels like I am not getting enough fluids (nor protien :(  ) Any ideas on timing my liquids or other ideas on keeping track? I know they said I should be consuming about 1 oz of liquid every five minutes, but I am so scared to make myself sick lol....I am trying! I am doing great otherwise...I just wanna make sure I get my nutrients and also not get dehydrated! Also I have not had a BM yet...ugh so I think milk of magnesia and I are going to meet this morning...lol

I would recommend that. I hadn't had a BM for awhile after surgery, so I got a mild, stimulant-free stool softener, and that did the trick. I felt much better then. As for liquids,. you just have to sip sip sip all day long. There's no real trick to it, that's what you have to do. You are only a couple days out though, so I wouldn't worry too much about not getting them all in yet. Plus remember, you can count things like the popsicles and broth.

I really wouldnt worry to much about not having a bm.  After surgery u arent taking much in to  have them...esp if u havent even been getting in your liquids...U may only dehydrate yourself by taking a lax....this is a very serious probem post op....  Leave water on your bedside table while u sleep and when u wake up each morning drink the luke warm water and then walk...its a natural lax....It should help once there is something in there to come out!!! I would worry more about walking to pass the gas and trying to get fluids in ...if only water at this point. Let me know if I can help u in any way.  I have some profect...have u tried that yet???  Its protein but without any milk...it was the only kind I could take post op

How do you know you are getting enough liquid and protein in?  Simple, measure.  I measured everything I ate and drank for the first 6 weeks then wrote it down in a spiral notebook for that date.  This might seem like a lot of work but remember that truly is your job now to make sure you are healthy and that you succeed!   About midway through the day I would tally my liquids and get an idea of what I needed to do to get them all in.  I am not a good record keeper but I got in such a good habit of doing this that I still do it and IU am now 4 months out.  But it is truly the only way I can keep track of what I have had.  Be drinking all the time except for the pre meal half an hour and the post meal half an hour!!
