Does anyone know anything about MICROALBUMIN?

I would think that it shouldn't keep you from getting the surgery...if anything, it might be considered another co-morbidity. It is very important to get your blood glucose levels under control and perhaps it's very early and may be reversible. Ask if it was visible in the more obvious kidney function tests. If it was just in the micro, then it's very possible that it could be reversed with the surgery because the surgery should help get your diabetes under control. Bring this up with your doctors and get answers from them before you go for a second opinion. If they don't want to answer you, get a second opinion. This could be very serious or just a bump in the road. Don't forget that the doctors are working for you. You or your insurance is there source of income. make them do their job. Hugs, Angie

Microalbumin will show in the urine in Kidney disease.  Usually due to high blood pressure or diabetes.  Once the screening test shows positive it will always be positve and they will have to monitor the amount of kidney damage by doing the microalbumin by running it another way that gives a total value.  It is usually done on a 24 hour urine sample to measure the output for the whole day.   It is not a good thing but it could work in your favor in getting approved.  With proper management of your blood pressure (and hopefully surgery) you can avoid further damage and should be fine.  The test for microalbumin is a good test.  It can detect kidney problems earlier than other tests (BUN and Creatinine) .  Did they say if either of these tests were elevated?  ( I work in a lab and run these tests every day).  Did your mom have untreated highblood pressure or diabetes that caused her kidney failure?  Or was it due to something else?  If she was obese and the kidney problem was caused by High BP or DM it sould definately work in your favor for getting approved.  Good luck.

They didn't mention either of these test, but I will ask when i go back on Nov.8th. Mom had diabetes for 24 yrs and just had kidney failure I believe the last 3 yrs or so before she died and was on dialysis the last 8 months. She was 5' and  160 lbs at her heaviest. But there was times she did not have money/insurance to get her meds. She always had insulin but not high blood pressure meds. I'm sure that was the problem.  I was on metformin since Jan. of this yr but not the last 3 months. she says I don't need them right now cause my ac1 is 5.6. does that sound right to you?  Thanks for replying Jan.

I agree with most of the previous posts ... ask for a 24 hour urine total protein and creatinine clearance, as well as urine microscopy (lab looks at urine under microscope for blood or abnormal cells).  Technically, you can't diagnose chronic kidney disease unless you have three abnormal random/spot urine microalbumins, or one 24 hour test. Most likely this mild elevation is from high blood pressure and/or diabetes.  Anything that helps control those problems, such as weight loss surgery, can help protect the kidneys.  Lisinopril is an excellent choice for both blood pressure control and kidney protection.  But if you develop a nagging dry cough it's probably a side effect, and then there's other treatment options out there.  It doesn't sound like you need a second opinion yet, why bother with the expense of seeing a new MD?  Just ask your current one for further evaluation and explanations.  If they're then unwilling or unable to answer your questions, ask to meet with a nephrologist (kidney specialist).  Good luck!!
