What's the deal with the sleep study? Please Respond

I guess when I filled out my questionaire, I entered that I still feel tired after a full night's sleep....or more acurately- I USED to before I had double coronary stent placement last year. I also snore...very lightly, when I have a cold or sinus infection. So now they want a sleep study. My question is- Tricare doesn't need it for my approval- Is it usually done for insurance approval, or is it considered a pre-op test?  I know it shouldn't be that big of a deal- but I CAN NOT deal with having to use a C-PAP. I have a traumatic reaction to having things in my mouth. Can they sedate you during the test? I'm afraid if they have to put one on me during the test , I'll freak out. Thanks, Angie

as far as i know most all surgeons require a sleep study, people with sleep apnea stop breathing during sleep, so if you have it they want you to use your cpap during your surgery since you will be under anesthesia. the cpap i have does not go in your mouth its like an oxygen mask. the test is mostly electrodes all over your body, then they read that and if you have sleep apnea they will have you come back and stay using the cpap.

Thank you- that helps ease my mind a little. Hah! I just thought of something. I've had four surgeries in the past year. I was under anasthesea(sp) every time. Probably would've been safer if they'd known if I had sleep apnea or not....heheh hmmmm,

Angie
