Worried about my son...

My 9 yo son, almost 10 in less that a month now, has some difficulties. He has adhd and a mood disorder. It could possibly be bipolar, like I have, but they are hesitant to say that yet, since he's young. He is just having more and more problems since school started a month ago. He melts down at anything, he will just start crying at times. Last night, he had homework, and he sat there for 45 minutes, wouldn't do it, just scribbled all over every paper I gave him. We have a doctor appointment today, so I hope they can adjust his medication or something. I just don't know what to do for him.

I'm sorry you and your son are having a rough time. *hugs* I will keep you both in my thoughts today and add a special prayer for you too. My sister is bi-polar manic depressive and takes medications. I understand the frustration and the despair you are feeling, though she is my sister and not my child, it is still hard to watch them struggle. She's 27 and it still can sometimes control her.

It could be his meds... My good friend has a son that has ADHD and his dr said that sometimes the meds he's on can make them lose weight... He's extremely skinny so he can't lose any weight.. .It's probably just a medicine change up. HOpe everything gets better

I'm sure the doctor should be able to help today.  I know with my oldest son the doctor told me that it was a very hard thing to tell wither a child had adhd or if it is bi polar. I do know that if there is bi polar in the family then they were more able to diagnosis with the bipolar.  I was also so told that he he was talking meds for adhd and on an antidepressant but really had bipolar that they could become worse cuz its not the right treatment, so supposedly that was how they could tell the difference in childre when it came to adhd or bipolar.  I'm hoping that I'm getting all this out right, I just felt the lortab kick in, lol.  I would be sure to talk to your doctor though cuz we know its not easy for you to handle and its not easy for the child to have to go through it at all either.  Hope things go well at doctors today, let us know.

My nearly 14 yr old has been on multitude of ADHD meds since he was 4 yrs old. Watching him trying to adjust from medication to medication and emotional meltdown after emotional meltdown has been so heartbreaking throughout the years. All I can say is that you are doing the "right" thing by staying ontop of it. Let him know it's okay to get frustrated and upset when your brain isn't working right, that's what I tell my son. Keep up with doc appointments. Likely my son has been on a medication that works relatively well for him now, of course he only takes it during the school year and nothing during summer breaks (doc said that would lower the problem of body resistance to the meds so he's able to take them over a longer period of time). My heart diffently goes out to you though. It's so hard to watch your child find the simplest tasks be so emotional overbearing for them. Good Luck & Hugs Jodi

I  understand completely what you are going through! It is so heart breaking when your child hurts and you cannot take it away!  Keep in mind that you are doing everything YOU can do to make him better by taking him to the doctor and monitoring his conditions in order to relay the information to the doctor.  Being there to comfort him and help him work through the issues is very important.  I know with my sons ADHD medications it seems that they work well for a time then things go haywire until we readjust the medications.  It's a difficult thing to go through because the child suffers from mood swings and emotional upsets until you find the right mix.  People without a child who has ADHD or is on these types of medicines have a hard time understanding how much it affects the family and others around them.  The emotions can run so high.  The non-aware person assumes you just have an out of control child.    Hang in there........it will get better!  Tell you doctor all the emotions and mood issues that your son has and I am sure he will work with you to adjust his medication.   Best Wishes Claudette
