Just wondering

Just was curious about something.  After wls, are you able to drink alcohol any at all?  I know that your body won't break it down, or something like that, but I was wondering if anyone tried to after, and what was the outcome. And, if so, how long did you wait before you tried to drink anything?

LaChelle,  Every "body" is differant, but you are definatley NOT  to drink after surgery-alcohol or carbonated drinks are out- unless you CHOSE to drink them. Then you  pay the consequences- instantly drunk, bone loss,embarrasing moments ( one gal I know  had 1 drink,fell on the dance floor and passed out) bleeding ulcers & hospitalization- besides switching addictions! Overeating is an addiction- and we can substitute it for so many others after surgery if we aren't vigulant. Shopping/spending/ careless sex/running around on your partner/alcoholism/so many more are links one can switch to without the proper after care needed to grow and thrive as a RECOVERING addict. Thats what support is all about- here on the boards, and the SG. meetings held, counciling as well helps to define what it is that causes you/me to hab\ndle life with food or any other chosen thing in place of reality.  Thank you for asking this question- so many who are searching for answers before surgery & after need to know the choises we make do count & are vital to our recovery from life time addiction & chosing the wrong things in our lives to "fill up the voids". I have been wondering this to. I dont really drink now. May have the occasional margarita but that is it.  So this isnt something I will miss.

My cousin Tami had WLS in 02 and she cant even drink a 1/2 of a beer and shes drunk. We hadnt heard back then about that so we all that she was faking and had a good laugh , but now we know how serious it was.

my best friend had the surgery over 4 years ago and she does drink every once in a while. but what she drinks is just wine and they put it in a shot glass for her and then she's done. and yes she was wasted. but yes be careful about how much you drink. i don't drink that much now i to have the every once in a while margarita and glass of wine. so won't miss it much. julie

I rarely even drink any now as it is.  Maybe a glass of wine every few weeks, but not much more than that.  I won't miss it thats for sure.  I just had a co-worker that is interested in the wls ask me that question, and I didn't know the answer, since everyone is really different on that.  Thanks for all the answers!
