The Biggest Loser
I am so excited that the BL starts its new season this evening. I have always loved this show, and I am so proud of those that are able to achieve their goals by only diet and exercise. I just know that if it weren't for the tools that are on this site, and all the support that each of us give each other, then I would not have any strength to continue working toward my goal of surgery.
Does anyone else watch this show? Did you apply to be on it like I did??? I have always wanted to try to get accepted, but they wouldn't because of my medical history. Oh well, thats fine, because if that were the case, I wouldn't have met all of you wonderful people here!
God Bless!

I love that show!! I watch it faithfully every week There is one thing that I want to say though. I spoke with my surgeon about WLS and why it's so hard for people to lose the "old fashioned" way. He said when your body gets to be more than 50% body fat or near 100 lbs over weight the mechanics of the body change. That's why it take ssomething so drastic to lose the weight such as surgery. These people that go on the biggest loser are also doing something drastic that most of us can't do. Exercising for 7-9 hours A DAY... So they're doing something drastic too to get the weight off... just doing it in a different manner. We both have our own struggles... theirs is just on tv..
Normally the eat less move more method only works for those overweight. Most OBEASE people need the added advantages of WLS to get them started.. I DID try all the non surgical routes to weight loss...and I DID do it with all my heart..
WLS is not the EASY way... it is the life long commitment to proper health maintence. If not handled properly and if not done with the lifetime commitment to proper health... there WILL be 2 results.. you will gain it back or you will die.
I am also proud of ANYONE who is able to shed their weight and begin a new healthier life regardless of the route that was taken but I now know that WLS takes total dedication because of the constant need to get the vitamins, and nurisment the body needs for a healthy mind and body.
No, I am not offended... I just dont ever like to get the feeling that WLS is the easy way...or copping out way.. sometimes it is just the only way..

I agree with everyone. It isn't easy no matter which route you choose. I even tried their method........I have the books and everything. I physically couldn't do it either. My body just doesn't like me to exercise to the point of total exhaustion, and then just eat a small bowl of sf jello. It just doesn't work that way with many of us. I am proud to say that in the future, after wls, I will be just as happy as ever that I went this route instead. And, my body will be happier too! LOL

The message from the BL is commitment! You have to WORK at maintaining a healthy weight. There are more then a few WLS people 1 to 2 years out that gain back the weight they lost even with surgery.
I have changed and work out 7 days a week. I will walk a minimum of 10000 steps a day. I will ride my bike 50 miles a week. I want to make that a habit that last for the rest of my earthly life.
I have lost weight the old fashioned way 4 or 5 times only to gain it back plus.
Turn the TV off and get outside, find a friend that will help you walk or ride a bike.
I believe most of the people back on the show were 10 to 30 lbs over their lowest weight. I would guess only 5% of the people have kept any weight off.
I am not trying to be a bummer. They would all say keep at it.

We were never ones to watch those reality type shows but this summer, we've been getting into watching Fat March. We just can't believe that they don't have a doctor out these people on a regular basis. I mean, expect someone +350 lb to walk 18 miles in 5 hours??? On the first episode, one guy had to go to the ER and come to find out, he was dehydrated! It's not enough to tell a fat person 'here's a bottle of water'. Shoot, a little bit of nutrition lessons would had helped this man alot!
What little I know about Biggest Loser, at least they are better supervised health-wise. I was impressed with how well each of them did last night in keeping the weight off. I'm sure they feel that a 10-15 lb gain is more than acceptable since they are back to the real world. Real world, we can't exercise 8 hr a day....we have to have a job & support ourselves financially. I am quite sure that how they live their lives now if WAY different than they did pre-BL. It's the lifestyle change that's going to make a difference!
I'm personally happy if I get 10,000 steps in a day, but I get in what I get in. After my feet surgeries, I'm not going to push them and cause further damage. I don't ride a bike. Bill likes to do activities with me and with him being almost blind, would not work out well at all. We do walk together...but not at the quick pace that I used to like to go for a good work out (Bill would fall and it would cause damage to my feet). My eating patterns and what I eat is far different than it use to be pre-op. I also no longer have a phobia about drinking...ugh..water...lol. I made lifestyle changes that I can live with. So how am I doing? I will be 3 year out on Sept 17th. No regain! After I have my plastics, I have no doubt that I'll end up at my personal goal (154..so that I'm within a the healthy BMI range for my height). You can be +2 yr post-op and be successful without exercising yourself to death! You have to find what works for you though and then stick with it. It is about a lifestyle change!
