Feel like a failure!

Where do i start?  Well I had my RNY on April 5, 2005 and my starting weight was 435lbs, i got down to 230lbs within a year and a half.  Now i am 2 1/2 years out almost and i am starting to put on some weight.  I know part of it is mainly because i dont have the time to get out and work out as much as i was, and i have resorted to drinking alot of coffee to keep me awake while working so much.  But i just feel like a failure, i mean my surgeon went as far as to use me in a television commercial for his practice, and here i am starting to put on weight.  I am back up to 250 and scared to death.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  I hate to go back to see him, i dont want him to think of me as a failure.. I just need to figure out something and get this weight back off.  I have even considered reverting back to a all liquid protein shake diet for a week or so but i dont know... any suggestions??  I REALLY FEEL LIKE A FAILURE AND NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Admitting you have a problem is the first step to sucess.. You need to change your routine..My surgery was April 26, 2005 and I too need to make changes to go back to being a looser.. We have become normal people... finally and we have to loose the normal way... Eat Less.. Move More!! I have gone back to trying to shove in protien and shy away from carbs and walking during lunch and breaks.. Hubby has a picture of me WHEN and looking at THAT picture is motavation to keep moving.. You might want to see your nutritionalist and get some ideas.. they said they were there for us for life... Best of luck to you.. Linda Kay

I don't think you're a failure. You can do this. You know what to do. You just have to get into doing it. I work with a personal trainer once a week. You can do this rather cost effectively by seeking if they offer this service at your local Y. That's where I started (my trainer left the Y earlier this year though, and I followed her.) She helps keep me on track. It might be an idea for you.

Brandon, You're hardly a failure.  You have done so well.  It's easy to lose touch once you've gotten to a certain point.  You just have to refocus and stay focused.  I had my RNY April 2006 and since I've lost my weight, I'm starting to get back into some bad habits again too.  Try to visit this board more often.  The support given/received here is vital to our success too.  Keep in touch. Brandon, Hi! No, you are NOT a failure!!! You're human! I really wish bariatric centers did more to cousil people on what do when they get further post-op and the honeymoon is over. Unfortunately, it is 'normal' for most people to regain a little bit once they are further post-op. Perhaps we get lazy on what we are suppose to do..or perhaps it's just that once the restrictions are all lifted, we're like kids in a candy store. Either way, the best way to lose it and keep it off is by making lifestyle changes and keeping them in place. The main three components to losing weight post-op is Protein, Exercise, and Water. Increase one or more of those and you'll see those pounds start coming back off. Also..and you KNOW someone was going to say this....quit drinking coffee (unless it's decaf)! Caffiene not only stimulates your appetite but it also dehydrates you. For each ounce of leaded java, you need 2 ounces of water IN ADDITION to the RDA of 64 oz just to break even (hydration-wise).  Keep in touch! We ALL need support to help guide & encourage us! I really appreciate all that everyone has posted to me, I really appreciate the encouragement.  I am going to make an appoitment to go see my surgeon and nutricionist back at deaconess where i had my surgery.  I need to get a handle on this.   If anyone else has any good idea on how to get back  on track keep them coming also please...  Also i work 16+hrs a day right now and have been for a while thats the reason for all the coffee to keep me awake.  Anyone have any ideas on how to keep myself energized working this much?? I mean working 16+ hrs a day coming home spending time wiht the wife for a while and then sleeping for around 4 to 5 hours then back at it..  Just curious.,..

Brandon, YOU ARE NEVER A FAILURE, JUST HUMAN AND MAKE MISTAKES- THANKFULLY YOU'VE ADMITTED IT AND NOW CAN TAKE CHARGE AND MOVE FORWARD!!!

First, let me say you aren't alone- the "honeymoon" is over for so many of us- that first yrs. rush, massive wt,. loss, & all that kudos that goes with it.Next, do what you know DOES work- try to get all the protien you can in , drink lots of water, and move whenever you can.( if you like coffee-have you tried Acheive One protien?? It is like Starbucks iced coffee- only full of protien!! Ask Sherri about it- shes the expert!)Change your protiens around.I was eating way too many carbs. now munching on celery & pb. or cheese for my "snack" time. Walk whenever you can- it helps- park farther from the door, take the stairs, just move more! I have been keeping a track of my daily food, water etc. even got a 2 ltr. water bottle & put it on the counter to make sure I sip, sip, sip. It all adds up to feeling better. After having a huge lung virul infection, even drinking became a problem for me- but I am making myself do it!(THAT IS WATER IN THOSE MUGS!!)  Do you get in your vitamens/mins??? I have been using chewable vitamen c, and making sure I get in my B12- yep, even men need it! Could be you need a blood work done to see if your low on anything. Go to the Dr. with your head held up and don't feel bad- admitting a problem is the first step- and you are well on your way back to being the "BRANDON" YOU ARE INTENDED TO BE!!! Keep posting on here, join us at a SG. or event, or just to say hi, and know we are all here for you/each other! YOU CAN DO IT, WE BELIEVE IN U!!!! (((hugs))) Ellen

First of all, you are not a failure!  I don't know anyone who could call someone who has lost 200 lbs a failure.

I haven't had my surgery yet so my words may not fall right with you.  I did read an article the other day in my husbands diabetic magazine about weight loss surgery.  It said that MOST people do gain some weight back after leveling off.  It also said that they know of NO ONE who has gained back all of their weight. I find this encouraging.  I'm so afraid I'll go through all of this only to gain it back.  I'm glad there's not many who do! It sounds like you've been given some good, sound advice.  I hope you do well with it and find peace with yourself.

Let us know how you do.

Blessings,

Jacqui

Hi Jacqui, I'm afraid you may want to go back and read that article again because you may have misread it, or whomever wrote the article is sadly mistaken. There are a lot of people that have had Lapband, RNY, VBG, etc that HAVE gained all of their weight back, and for many people, plus some more.  The DS forum is full of people who have gained all of their weight back after a previous surgery and are now seeking or have gotten a revision to the DS.  Now while a lot of people who have had WLS do very well with it, there is a large percentage that don't.  It is a very real existance.
