Big Medicine

Ok so I'm adicted to the show Big Medicine.  I was watching last night and the drs were doing a lap rny on a girl whose BMI was over 50.  One of the drs kept commenting on how hard it was to perform the surgery on someone with a BMI over 50.   I have a BMI over 50.  I'm a bit worried anyway about my surgery.  I'm sure we all are at times.

Does anyone here know if I will be asked to do the liquid diet before my surgery?  I'm having it at St. Vincent's on October 26.  Did any of you do the liquid diet beforehand? Kind of rambling on here.  Just wondering about the BMI thing and how I can help get it lower before my surgery. Thanks for your help. Jacqui

hi there again my bmi was high i think like 48.4 or something like that...i had surgery at st vincent's with dr huse and did not do a liquid diet pre-op...i'm not sure but i don't think any of the dr's at st vincent's have their patients do that...but i could be wrong...the other people here will know more on that... just begin to watch what you are eating and try to make good choices pre-op and maybe you'll drop a few lbs and that can not hurt hugs jen

I have Dr Gupta and from what I have been told you do not have to do the 2 wk liquid diet.  But that may be on an individual basis to. I am not sure. Hope to be finding out soon.

My BMI Is 71 and I will be having my surgery at St. V's with Dr. Cacucci (if insurance EVER approves me!!).  Dr. Cacucci does not have you do a liquid diet before surgery AND she thought I would be able to have the laparoscopic RNY even with at my weight.  A lot depends on how you carry your weight--I am a definite PEAR shape and my weight is pretty well distributed throughout my body.  Dr. Cacucci said that if I were an APPLE shape (if I carried more weight on my stomach and chest than my legs) then I would probably have to have an open RNY.   Good luck to you!!

Jacqui, Remember that Big Medicine is a TV show and it wouldn't be interesting without drama. Bill tells me the same thing when I talk about Fat March. lol My pre BMI was 56.8. I had Dr. Gupta at St. Vincent's and had a lap RNY. I did not have to do the liquid diet pre-op. Sherri

Hi Jacui, I am new to this site and this is my first time doing this!  I too I'm addicted to the show Big Medicine. I doctors seem so nice and sincere.  I had my RNY Ocotber 17 2002 At Winona hospital in Indianapolis. I didn't have to go on any kind of a diet. The day beofre I was allowed to eat a normal breakfast, soft foods for lunch and then liquids for dinner. I'm sure everyplace does it different, though.  Good Luck!!!

Hi Jacqui I am having lap RNY on Tuesday September 4th, and I am on my liquid diet right now.  My doctor, Dr. Burry requires us to go on optifast two weeks prior to our surgery.  Roght now I am on my second day and I could eat anything that was put in front of me but instead I drink a big galss of water and go for a short walk.  I get 7 optifast products a day.  I can have 3 of the soup products and one bar and the rest in shakes.  So far everything tastes fine but I can can honestly say I am hungry.  I know it will get easier as the week moves on.  I still cook for my family that can be alittle hard but I know I can do it.  This is what i have worked for.  I know every doctor is different.  I know Dr. Burry said this would reduce the size of my liver and the more weight I lose the less I have to lose after surgery.  I also think it is preparing my body for surgery so maybe we went be so hungry after wards.  I wish you much luck and success on your upcoming procedure.  Lisa

Hi Jacqui,

My BMI was 48.5, and I didn't have to go on a liquid diet. I wish you all the best- Big medicine is a great show, but not all of the story, or each individuals personal truth, as you recieve here. To me the best help, advice, encouragement,. & support comes from the the "Hoosier Loser" family of recoverers ~here!!!! (((hugs))) Ellen

My doctor was Inman at St. Vincent's. I didn't have a liquid diet either. I was told at the pre-op class to enjoy what foods I could the day before and say good bye to them... so I did. I ate a lot that day and enjoyed every bite. I was over 65 BMI. I was on ice chips for 2 days, grape juice and ice chips on the third day, and then on the fourth I was given an ounce of orange jello and an ounce of oatmeal for breakfast, then at lunch I got an ounce of mashed potato (instant) and an ounce of cottage cheese. I was discharged after lunch.
