My first follow up

So far I am down 30 lbs since Friday and I just feel really exhausted. I went for my follow up today and had to see my surgeon's partner and lets just say I don't like him. The dietician tells me keep on with the gatorade but the surgeon i saw today said he doesnt like patients doing gatorade because its got 14 g of sugar and they do this surgery to help people lose weight not gain it. But obviously I'm doing okay in that department with drinkin it and the NUT told me that it's okay and when I was released my doc said it was okay.  Today was rough we went to my appointment and stopped to have lunch with Rich's cousin (well i had gatorade) and it was tough because we couldn't find Decaf Iced tea or even tea anywhere. I was soooo frustrated by passing all the pop machines and all but not being able to find anything to drink, because the gatorade started making my tummy upset. oH and apparently some orders have gotten mixed up somewhere because the way the doc talked today was as if I've been getting fluids through my PICC or supposed to be  because he kept telling me I need to get my fluids up soon because i can't have a PICC line forever. I'm trying sooo hard I can't help it if I can only get 20-23 oz in :( Oh well tis life I guess.

Misty,    Be carefull with your fluids. I use water & add those Crystal Light packets or herbal teas in them (I carry them in my purse)  & also kept Isopure in a cooler in my car when I was first out of surgery. Have you tried any Isopure drinks for protien? You can get them at GNC, or go to Cutting Edge Nutrition in Castleton,~ Bob will help you find what you need as far as protien- I use Shake-a-Way from there.     I just worry about your  protien/fluid levels- thats part of the exhastion. Are you using SF popcycles? I like the Edies SF.Fruit Bars & the banana/fruit flavored flavored SF pops from Super Wal-Mart or Meijers. All good!  Check them out & I hope you feel better soon! You WANT to get that PICC line out soon!! (((hugs))) Ellen

I know i want the pICC line out soon and i'm trying but the crystal lite makes me sick I've tried numerous flavors, even before surgery they did because i can' t handle the aspartame. the only artificial sweetner i can handle is Splenda. I've done the SF popsicles but they also make me feel really sick to my stomach, and i've tried like 3 or 4 kinds. I just hate that I'm being made to feel like crap by him for doing what I was told was okay to do (gatorade) I

Misty, There's popcycles & flavored waters out there that is Splenda sweetened. Just look for their little symbol. Trust me, sugar-free queen that I am, I have seen them! LOL!  There are also water additives made with Splenda...that isn't Crystal Light. I can understand both sides on the Gatorade issue. I realize it is the one thing you've actually been able to keep down...and it will help to keep you from going into ketosis. But...it is high in sugar and sugar + RNY = problems. There is some sugar-free grape juice (I believe it's Welches) that would do the same thing. Dr. Cacucci may have planned for you to only be on the Gatorade for that initial week. Durring those first few weeks, I think a person would lose weight no matter what she/he drank because they can drink/eat so little compared to before. But after that? It gets harder so the better you can lose weight now, the better off you'll be then. Hmmm...and who to listen to??? The first one, is your surgeon. Second, anyone your surgeon puts in charge of your care (all of her fellow surgeons....Dr. Diaz, Dr. Jones, Dr. Gupta). Third, the nuts. I've had it several times where the nut would tell me one thing and the surgeon another. The surgeon is the one who knows your insides. They don't go by a textbook on what is ok or not. They go by YOU...so if the surgeon says 'no' and the nut says 'yes'...it's no. The nuts are use to telling people that gatorade is ok IF you are in ketosis and ONLY for a short term...2-3 days. It's not meant to be the main beverage 24/7 for weeks at a time.  Oh...and forth...is anything you get from anyone else...including all of the well-meaning people here on OH. We try to share advise from our exeperiences but if anything you see here is the opposite of what your surgeon tells you, you listen to the surgeon, not us. Hope you getting to feeling better, Sherri

It was more then just the gatorade the reason I dont like him btw! It was his tone of voice and the fact that he was just rude. Might have been a bad day, I don't know but it was still frustrating.  As far as the gatorade issue it's only been like 1/4-1/2 of my fluids not the ONLY thing I'm getting in. If it was all I was drinking I could completely understand it. And 9 out 10 its got 5-6 ice cubes in with 3 oz of liquid so it ends up being all water before I drink it.

Well I found out today from Dr Cacucci's nurse that I guess starting tomorrow (if they get the supplies here this evening) that I am going to be started on TPN 24/7 until my followup on the 27th. She was waiting on Dr Diaz to sign off on it to have it sent (My doc is on vacation) soo I don't know anymore.  I know its for my own good and I can't possible force anything else in. I tried last night and ended up vomiting. :( I'm feeling soo bummed out.  I've tried everything. It's not flavors or anything that make me sick it's everything.
