Help with vitamins

I know that there are certain vitamins that I will have to take.  I know that these come in liquid form. I read somewhere on here.   My surgery will probably be coming up next month so I wanted to stock up on the stuff I am going to need.  What exactly do I need to get?  As far as protein drinks, calcium (exactly which kind of calcium), what all other vitamins and strength as far as dosages?  Cheapest places to get them as well.  Thank you so much! Jenny

Jenny, You will get all this information at the nut forum that you go to.

Protein drink: St. Vincent recommends their new post-ops to try to drink a mix of skim milk, powder milk, and flavoring. The flavoring can be sf CIB, sf jello powder, or about any other sf/non-caffinated flavoring. Don't go and get a mega size of anything. Not everyone can handle the taste of this. I had the best luck using sf jello...lime or lemon. Flintstone chewable vitamins: it was 3 a day. I, personally, have switched to Kroger's cheapie brand. It contained the same amount of nutrients at a fraction of the cost.  Citrical chewables: 2-3/day..usually I get these at Wal-Mart Vitamin B12: Sublingual, twice a week OR injectables, once per month. Most doctors will prefer you try sublinguals first, Any pharmacy Biotin: Tablet form, at least 300 mcg/day to reduce hair loss, Any pharmacy B1: 1 tablet per week, 100 mcg, Any pharmacy

That's it. They may have changed a little bit since my last check-up. If you go to the nut class and find out they have, please post it here so I can update what I am taking...k? Remember that everyone isn't told to do the same things...k? Go by what Dr. Gupta wants you to do. If she doesn't specify, then go by what the nuts at St. Vincent says. It does not matter what anyone else is told to do by who-ever. We each have individual needs and what matter is what you are told to do for YOURS. Sherri

I wouldn't stock up on too much ahead of time, as your tastes may change. I couldn't tolerate the sweetness of the Citricals after surgery. I got chewable calcium from GNC instead, which the NUT's told me was okay. I am going to try the Citricals again though, now, since I'm farther out.

Thanks Sherri!  So I dont have to do the liquid vitamins. I can do chewable, even right after surgery?  They wont hurt anything?  I will repost if any thing has changed.

Jenny, I have never been told by the nuts or Dr. Gupta to do liquid vitamins. I have asked the nuts about them though and was told 'no' because they didn't have enough of the righ nutrients. No, the chewables won't hurt you post-op. Even as a newbie. Tablets which will dissolve in water (like the B1 & Biotin) won't hurt you either. Capsules..which don't disolve in water....if they aren't too big, probably wouldn't hurt you...but you also wouldn't get any benefit from them either. They require stomach acids to dissolve. With an RNY, you are bypassing the portion of the stomach that makes stomach acids. So..the capsules will pass right through you, undissolved. And for the B12....a regular B12 vitamin also requires stomach acids to break down and do you good. The sublinguals, if chewed and swallowed, still would not have the acids to break it down for use. So...they must be dissolved under the tongue (like nitro) in order to be of use. Sherri

I use CVS on line to get their chewable Flintstone style vitamins and they have a liquid calcium also.  The calcium runs out at times so I buy 2 and order when one is empty.  Takes about 1  month to use the liquid calcium. B12 and B1 will last forever so I just buy when I need.
