I know that we cannot eat a lot of sugar and fat after gastric by pass but I was wondering if there are any other foods that some of you have had diffuculty with?  Is rice ok in like stuffed cabbage? Or skinless sausage?  Those are two things I'm just wondering about for down the road.

Hi.  It varies what different people tolerate.  Rice and pastas are allowed at some point in our plan. (I don't remember exactly what phase it was now)  I try to avoid them as much as possible because of the high carbs.  Anything called "sausage" probably has more fat than you want.  I go to our local meat market and get ground pork and they season it for me with red pepper and sage.  It is leaner than the ground beef you buy at the store and is great to cook with either on the grill or in pan.

Rice and pasta have not been too pouch-friendly for me.  Anything that swells when cooked also swells in my pouch leaving me feeling over-stuffed and miserable.  Meats that are too dry also do not sit well.  When re-heating leftovers I always add water or broth to keep things moist.

I have noticed a trend with steak.  Some folks tolerate it just fine while others cannot handle it at all.  It seems to be the more rare the steak the better it is tolerated.

The further out I get, the more I realize that most dishes are still do-able..with a few adjustments, and in moderation.

For dishes containing rice: Once you have to ok to include rice (6-12 months), use long grain brown rice instead of white. Less gluten, less carbs. For dishes containing sausage: Substitute with turkey sausage. Less fats. For dishes containing sugar: use splenda. You may need to experiment a little bit. For dishes contining pasta: Try spaghetti squash instead. For dishes containing fat: Use olive oil (oo, voo, or evoo) for meats. Use canola oil for veggies or desserts. Use 'light' butter/margarine. Use lowfat cream cheese/sour cream/shredded cheese (fat free doesn't blend/cream/melt as well) There are several sugar-free, low fat products in the grocer. Don't be afraid to experiment. Keep your sugar, fat, carb, and calorie intake as low as possible...and be sure to keep all things in moderation. Join SparkPeople.com and/or FitDay.com. These sites will help you track your nutrition levels and will assist you in figuring up the nutritional value of that stuffed cabbage. I think when people think that they can NEVER have ____ again, that can get depressing...and most of us binge ate because of some form of depression. So yes, eventually, you MAY have many of the things you enjoy now...should you still have a desire for any of it IF you adjust the ingredients and eat moderately. Sherri ps...post-op, there are many things that you will not want anymore or cannot handle (other than sugar, fats & fried foods). Each person seems to be unique in this. I cannot eat carrots anymore and I've had no desire for my old fast food stand-by's.

Brown Rice is OK for me--a little bit--anyway.  White rice and pasta cause me to DUMP!!!!  I avoid simple carbs and sugar.  Steak is interesting--I don't tolerate sirloin or strip steak so well.  BUT I love filet.  I eat it rare, and it goes down easy!!  Lots of protein!!!!  The better the cut of meat, the better is goes down.
