I had my surgery 7 weeks ago. For the past 2 weeks I have been vomiting . I don't think at first i was vomiting everything I ate but know it is as I can only keep liquids down. I called my dr. I have a appt. tomorrow but I have heard some different things. When they do the scope and then dilate the stoma does it hurt? Do they put you out? I don't want to be put out because I almost died on the surgery table and don't want that to happen again. If you have any advise PLEASE let me know. thanks, Tammy

Tammy, Im sorry to read that u had such a ruff time. I hope things get better for you soon. I personally have not had a scope but I dont think they put u under like with surgery. I think they just sedate u. I think u are relaxed but not totally under. Im sure some that have been thru it can relieve your fears soon. I wish u all the best and hope that this will help u to get better soon. Mariah

Tammy, Hi. When I had my scope they did put me out, but I also had a colonoscopy right afterwards. Believe me, you won't feel a think other than thirsty when you wake up, and you will feel better! Hopefully they will find out what is going on and that you'll feel great again. I'll be thinking of you. ((hugs)) Ellen

Tammy, What you get is a lovely little concoction. You THINK you are out, but you aren't. There's either 2 or 3 drugs to it and it gets injected into your IV. You are actually awake, but remember nothing. You have to be because they will tell you to swallow...and need you to swallow when they tell you to. It's the tiny camera that you are swallowing. Tell your designated driver that when you come out of it, you will probably be talking in a loop until you start realizing what you are saying. My loop was usually 'How big was I? Did they dilate me? Was there any ulcers? Did they take pictures (they always did, but yet, I asked..lol)? Let me see them.' They'd hand me the pics, I'd get quiet for about 5 minutes and then start the llop over again. The quicker they can get you to eat ice chips, the quicker you'll snap out of it. Tell them that the word of the day is 'patience'. Does it hurt? Nope. I had 15 of them..no pain. Twice however, I perforated at the stoma but didn't know it till I was about home and that did hurt (this is NOT a common occurance). Normally though, no pain at all. In fact, if they need to dilate you, you feel 100% better. The dilation is done by vibration with a balloon at the end of the tube you swallowed (that has the camera on the end too). The biggest pain? The IV getting started...and alot of that is because when we go in for endo's, we are usually a little bit dehydrated so it can be a little bit hard for them to get a good stick. So...ease your mind. It'll all go fine. Sherri btw...it's also somewhat of a rarity for someone to have to have 15 endo's so don't get concerned that it may happen to you...k?

Sherri What do you mean by perforated? i can keep water down but nothing else. I am really scared. When youperforated what did they have to do? How long does the procedure take?

Tammy, When you need to be dilated open, it's usually because where the intestines is reconnected to your new pouch (called the stoma) has a stricture. A stricture occurs when the opening decreases..usually due to scar tissue. The stoma is normally ~12-15 mm in diameter. For some people, they don't have problems until it gets to ~4 mm..others, at 8 mm. It's very individual. A perforation is a rip...a tear. Mine was at the stoma. The tissue got brittle from being shrunk then dilated, shrunk, dilated, repeat. Like I said, it's a rarity. I had to have an x-ray to confirm it. Then spent the night in the hospital with an IV and nothing by mouth. The next day, the perfs had closed up on their own. The entire endo procedure..what the doc does...is maybe 10 minutes. It takes longer for you to get off your talking loop! LOL! Trust me, you are going to wonder what your concerns were all about. Sherri

I had one to check for an ulcer the drugs are fabulous, no need to worry about that part of it, I asked my mom 7 times if I had an ulcer. I don't remember anything not even them sticking the endoscope in my mouth. I also asked the nurses if we could sell the drugs on e-bay. My mom was expecting the FBI to roll in any time LOL. It does sound like your stoma is closing. Everything will be fine you are in great hands. Sarah

I am getting hungry. 2 weeks of just liquids is making me weak. I go to the dr. tomorrow will he do it then or will I have to come back? I live almost 2 hours away?

It varies on how a doc handles it. I would bring a designated driver with you just in case...and depending on what time your appointment is, I wouldn't attempt the meal before it. let us know how it goes... Sherri
