having a problem
Hi all,
Every day after lunch, I get tired, I don't mean a little, I mean falling over, can't keep my eyes open, feel like crap, need to lay down, tired. Its hard when your working. It lasts for about 2 hours then I start to get my second wind and I'm fine. I tried cutting way back on carbs and it hasn't helped. What's up? Only happens at lunch time. Anybody have any answers?
Four things come to mind off hand...
1. Sure you are getting enough water in? Dehydration can make you drowsy.
2. Have your thyroid checked lately? When it's underactive, you feel energy zapped.
3. Do you have a machine to check your sugar? You may becoming hyglycemic.
4. Do you get your B12 via sublingual? If so, you may need to go to injections instead.
Sounds like it's something you may want to call your doc on. Bloodwork is probably in order....

Pamela,
If it is your sugar dropping, it is protein you want to increase, not any kind of carbs. Carbs will get you on a roller coaster with your sugar. It will bring it up, only to drop it again. If your sugar is dropping, PLEASE seek a endocrinologist so he can diagnose you and see if you are becoming a hypoglycemic. If so, you will need to work very closely with your dietician to get it under control. I also have to carry glycine tablets with me. My sugar has dropped as low as 43. Not a good thing at all.

Correction/Clarification
To PREVENT your sugar from bottoming out, REPLACE simple carbs with complex carbs.
Simple carbs go into your body as 'sugar' and burns up fast. So...you get a spike up (sugar buzz) and then a drastic drop.
Complex carbs take a long time to break down into sugars and can therefore maintain your sugar levels better than simple carbs can.
If your sugar has bottomed out, use Protein. Protein gets in your system quick and it's natural sugars bring the blood back up to a safe level, and it stays in your system. When my sugars bottom out, I grab a cheese stick or some peanut butter. For ME, I not only lose my energy, but I also get a hot flash and jittery.
It took awhile to get mine under control since complex carbs do it to me too...it just takes a little longer for them...and other than a few slices of whole wheat bread or a couple of wheat crackers, all carbs are on my no-no list. This was working with the endocrinologist and dietician. The ditician and I exchanged emails a few times a wee****il we were able to nail down what all the culprits were for me and I was seeing the endo once a month.
If anyone would like to learn more about hypoglcemia and carbs (simple & complex), SparkPeople.com is a wonderful source of information about this, and many other topics. Of course, it, nor anyone on here, can replace your best number one source...your doctor.

Sherri, u said....If it is your sugar dropping, it is protein you want to increase, not any kind of carbs. Carbs will get you on a roller coaster with your sugar
If your sugar is low and u are light headed and dizzy and you are in the danger zone...protein wont bring it back up fast enough. I agree with u that u dont want sugar or a roller coaster ride with sugar.
Ive been a nurse for yrs and I do this with my brittle diabetics and myself and it works wonders....I take a little peanut butter and some skim milk....It increases my carbs and it sustains me all night. Ive even made the cheese crackers in the microwave and put peanut butter on them....Its them.
When I say increase your carbs Im not talking about increasing sugar. I dont eat sugar or flour on this diet Im on. I do a low carb diet but sometimes I have to have a few carbs...u cant cut them all out. Some of them we do need. Its the ratio thats important. Carbs come in many forms....fiber and alot of veggies consist of carbs without eating pure sugar. Yes they are natural sugars but I dont have a problem with my glucose levels when I have them.
