Should I be offended or flattered??

I went for my post op testing today and because I am over 50 I had to see a cardiologist. While the nurse was taking my BP and such she said "You are the smallest person I have ever seen getting WLS" I thought gees, I am 100 + lbs overweight. I have health issues directly relating to my obesity. I want to get down in the floor and play with my grandchildren. I'm sure she intended it as a compliment but it didn't feel that way. I felt like I had to defend myself. Anyway, I finished all my testing, FINALLY!!! Had to have a stress test and echo at the cardiologist plus all the other stuff. I feel like a pin cushion...stuck 3 times... Went in at 9am and just got home at 6pm. Guess they will let me know if everything is OK. I spoke with the cardiologist and he said my results were great! I am starting to feel a little more relaxed for the surgery, but I am sure that may change from day to day....less than 2 weeks to go....!!! Linda

Linda I was told that all the time. my bmi was only 39.5, and after I had my surgery people were say why did I have it and these were people that had wls, they felt I didn't need it. I actully was angry because I thought they had it why should I get to I had a lot of health problems I suppose I was just a little made. I hope you luck and just fell relaxed and calm down everything is all worth it belive me. Lisa B

Linda, I had surgery 21 days ago and I know what you mean about the comments. I had a BMI of 41 and to most people in Indiana, that just looks normal. That's because we are one of the fattest states in the union and people here can't see morbid obesity for what it is. I can't tell you the number of people who told me that. I wish I had a great response to gently educate people. If you think of one, let me know! Otherwise, good luck with your surgery and keep us posted! Ken

Don't sweat it Linda. I was the same way. I even had one woman at work say to me: "Don't take offense, but I thought that was just for 'BIG' people". I had a wls patient tell me I was what was called "a light weight". Neither of them meant to offend. It was just their perspective. I told the woman at work that I just carried my weight well. You are doing what is right for you to improve your health and quality of life. That is all that really matters. Cindy

I have run into the same problem. I think I am BIG and the people at work are telling me I am not big enough to have the surgery. maybe I just carry my weight well but I have a BMI over 40.
