I wrote a couple weeks back. I had a full roux en y at St. Vincent Carmel. I immedialtely started getting kidney stones, and had a abdominal hernia. But being a bariatric patient I thought this is just what I am going to have to go through. Unlike most candidates I was a very healthy fat person. I saw Carnie Wilson have hers and planned mine from there. Well around three yrs out I started a small wt gain. The physcician put me on Adipex, gave me a scope, and upper GI and said I was fine. hmmm it was kind of hard to believe when my appetite seemed as normal as before. The doctor reassured me stomach was still small and so was opening. Well here I am my surgery date was Oct12,2001 and it is January of 2007 and I have gained one hundred pounds back. This time I went to Clarion North and their staff was great...but guess what my stomach is still tiny and so is my opening. The only information I received was from the Doctor of Radiology who said the distal section of my surgery is not stopping my food and it is going straight into my intestines. I asked to have a follow up with Bariatric Doctor from Clarion North and his suggestion was to go through the dieticians. I have been overweight for forty years and have followed their plan since 2001 metobolic kidney stones and all. Now they want me to pay for their dieticians to lose my weight again. I ask you...I f a dietician can cure my problem why did I need the surgery in the first place. Does anyone know of anyone who specializes in the distal problems of bariatric surgery outside of Indiana I feel frustrated. I have followed the diet and now told I need to follow a new diet...Name it and I have been on it. My stomach is tiny as the doc said and so is the opening...so what went wrong? Thanks for any help. Kelly, I would try Dr. Inman at St. Vincent. She's the only one I know of that does the distal switch so would probably have a pretty good working knowledge of distal issues. Sherri

Unfortunately, Sherri, I had the first surgery at St Vincent Carmel with Rose Marie Jones. The second opinion, came from Dr. Samar Mattar. If you know Dr. Mattar is one of the best is the state second to Dr. Hughes and they work hand in hand with Dr. Jones. I think they are great surgeons but if anything goes wrong during the surgery it will be on one of their percentages. And of course, Dr. Mattar offered the services of his nutritionist which since I follow the bariatric diet I dont really have that need. According to the Doctor of Radiology nothing stops in my stomach. How embarrassing to have this perfect surgery tiny stomach and opening but distally having a problem.LOL Only me...So here is someone who had a perfect surgery and continues and have gained over a hundred pounds. So if you here of someone who is not emmeshed with all these Indy docs would appreciate it. Thank You for your Reply. Kelley Golden Starr

I've been very impressed with my surgeon here in Northern Indiana. Its a ways from Anderson (South Bend) but the insight and expertise I have seen, and the willingness to continue to search for solutions have led me to recommend them to you. They are Gerig Surgical Associates, Specifically Winston Gerig and Denise Murphy. There obviously seems to be something askew with the malabsorptive component of your RNY. I hope you find the solution. How frustrated you must feel!
