High liver enzymes

Just had a call from my PCP...liver enzymes high. I have had this problem for about 6 months now and have had a couple of scans which showed no problem, but my Dr. is very cautious and now wants me to see a liver specialist. At one point they said it was probably just a "fatty liver". I was curious if any of the testing done pre op includes liver tests? Dont have an appointment with the specialist until Feb 26th and I am waiting for a date for surgery which Dr. Cacucci's office told me today,, they were still booking for Feb. I dont want this appointment with the specialist to hold up the surgery when most probably it is just the fatty liver. Anyone familiar with this problem and how it relates to the WLS? Thanks, Linda

Well, I have a fatty liver, but I don't think it has ever thrown off my enzymes. They do an ultrasound of the gall bladder and liver as part of the pre-op testing. If it is fatty, they might have a hard time seeing it and then will do a CT scan. Mine actually came back with 2 spots on my liver, which they think are hemangiomas (vascular growths) but aren't sure. Either way, they did my RNY as scheduled and are going to repeat the CT scan in 6 months after hopefully I (and my liver) and have lost some weight. Good luck!!!

Thanks!, That makes me feel better that there are some liver tests that will be done and they should catch it if there is a need for further testing. Linda

Are you on any medications (like for diabetes or cholesterol)? Those can elevate your liver enzymes. Actually tyelenol can affect the liver. I also had a fatty liver with a mass that I had to go back for a CT scan for. Nothing really showed up and it didn't postpone the surgery. Pre-op they test just about everthing you can think of so if there is a problem they can rule it out ahead of time. Whatever your specilaist does they probably won't have to reapeat. Good Luck and try not to worry to much.

Thanks Jan. I only take a high blood pressure medicine and nexium. I have quit taking all anti infamitories, like aleve, advil etc. This is about the 3rd time out of 4 bloodwork that it has been high. Already had a ct scan w/o contrast and one with. Both were OK. Sounds like tests will be done pre op to rule anything out. Thanks again for the info. Linda
