As I posted yesterday my Vitamin D was really low. 11 and should be above 32. So when I talked to Dr. C's office the nurse not Jill her nurse, but a different one told me to call the dietician for suggestions, the dietician in return said it was definately something the Doc should take care of. So I called Dr. C. again, this time talked to Jill who said they had just started testing for Vitamin D deficiency so that's why the nurse said that. They ordered Vitamin D 50,000 units daily(prescription strength) for 5 days then a retest. Today Dr. Cacucci called me herself to explain the vitamin D issue. They started testing more for Vitamin D when the change to Calcium Citrate instead of Carbonate was made. Heard about it at the same conference. They are finding that people who have a High Parathyroid hormone are deficiant in Vitamin D, and once your PTH comes back high supplimentation of Vitamin D doesn't help. High PTH can cause kidney problems. So their thinking is to pay attention to Vitamin D and treat deficiencies before the PTH is affected. I was the first with low Vitamin D but normal calcium and PTH. She sent me here to read about it in case anyone else wants to. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/531684_4 I get retested in 6 days then if its up I'll continue with the calcium. If its down then I may have to have IV Vitamin D. Pretty interesting and after reading about problems with PTH, I'm super glad their testing now. Have I ever said I just love Dr. Cacucci, love, love, love her. On another note I won't be at the clothing exchange either, just to far to drive. I agree with Jan maybe the next one can be on the northern side of Indy. I'm sad I'll miss everybody, but I'll try for the baby shower. Sheri, I'm so glad you told us about The Turkle consult. I want to here the whole story, e-mail me or I'll talk to you at the baby shower. I made an appt. for a consult with Dr. Grasee on Feb. 2nd. I can't wait. Sarah

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't confusing anybody. Vitamin D affects the parathyroid the four small glands behind the thyroid gland. It does not affect the the thyroid gland two different glands two different functions. So if you have hypothroidism it has nothing to do with Vitamin D. Dr. C. assured me of this. Hyperparathyroidism is caused by low vitamin D. Sarah
