Is there a reason we are not allowed to have Sugar Free Ice Cream or Sherbert? Thanks Bonnie

I would guess that it's because (1) they often have a high fat content and (2) to help establish good eating patterns. Once you are further out and have a little more self control than you do pre-op, sf ice cream/sherbet...as long as it is also low in fat...can be an excellent treat. Sherri

Bonnie, I know that sugar subs can cause u to crave real sugar. Ive been told to avoid sugar subs in the past esp when u are trying hard to get off sugar. Ive noticed that since surgery I havent had any cravings so Ive stayed away from all the sugar free icecreams becouse they have so much manitol in them and other sugar subs and I dont want to get my body back to having any cravings for anything. Im trying to learn to eat for fuel and for fuel only...not becouse Im just craving something. Im sure alot of ppl with disagree with me but Im just sharing my personal experience...This did not come from my surgeon....They said I could have sugar free popsickles.

PErsonally, even though I'm jsut now about 6 months out- I eat it. Like Sherri said, I just make sure it's low in fat as well, and I really find that it doesn't take NEARLY as much to satisfy me as it once did. I don't eat it daily, or even weekly. Most of the time it gets thrown out due to freezer burn But I never had much a a sweet tooth as a pre-op, and I've used sugar substitues forever, so that may make a difference as well. I prefer a popcicle usually. Fruity sweet, frozen and 15 calories. You cant go wrong!

When they have icecream at my house I just grab a light/fat free yogurt. Yoplait has some great flavors. Orange cream, apple turnover, raspberry white chocolate. 100 calories, 0 fat and 5 gr of protein. Usually 1/2 the container satisfies me so that is only 50 calories! I used to love icecream, I've taken a couple bites(just to taste a flavor) since surgery at BD parties but I just don't want it like I used to.
