Hello, how are you all? Doing well I hope! I am getting really excited about this process. I feel like I finally have a plan, and that's a good feeling. I have had my first monthly visit to the doctor for medically supervised weight loss before-hand. I have my two consultations set. My mom is going to come with me to both. I am hoping that she will feel better about this decision by doing that. I really want her on board with me, because she's a big support in my life. Over this last week, I've bought some books and started to look at the different kinds of surgery. I really want to see what my doctor will recommend for me though. When I went for a consult before (no surgery at that time), the surgeon just told me, "Well what do you want?" I was a little bothered by that. I wanted his medical opinion. That's why I'm getting two consultations this time with two different surgeons. I am starting to think from the books though that the RNY looks best. I guess there are success stories, and not so good stories with each one, probably though. I also joined our local Y this week. I figure it couldn't hurt to start getting used to exercising now. Linda, Congrats on these first steps. What surgeons did you/are you going to for your consults? Are they here in Indy? You will find on this board that most, but certainly not all, have had RNY...each for their verious reasons. A few deciding factors will help you have an idea what is best for you however: 1. How much upkeep are you willing to do? Those who have lap-band have to go in regularly to have the band filled. 2. Are you willing to go more radical? Rny is a more extensive surgery than lap-band. Each can have their own set of complications. 3. Are you a sweet freak or a starch lover? If cakes & cookies are your weakness, RNY will be the best tool to help you overcome that as many people dump post-op if they have any. If pasta & potato is more to your liking, the Distal Switch may be more up your alley. Dr. Margaret Inman from St. Vincent, Carmel is the only surgeon that I know for sure performs this type. 4. What surgeries does the surgeon YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH perform? Not all of them perform all the types. Most perform RNY's..but not all of them are comfortable with performing it laproscopic (5-6 small incisions instead of 'open' with one longer incision). Just be sure to ask the surgeon tons of questions. If you aren't satisfied with the answers...that surgeon may not be for you. Good luck!! Sherri

Its such a wonderful journey- youll be glad you did it. Like Sherri said, everyone has a surgery that is right for them. Just choose which would be best for you. I have a friend that had the duodanal switch with dr inman in dec, and she's doing great! I've had a great experience (as have many others) with RYN, and Jodi is the only lap bander I know, and she looks FANTASTIC! ANy way you slice it, it's a step towards a healthier and happier you.

Linda, I think it is a great idea to start working out now. I started working out about 8 months before I made the decision to have the surgery (to control the diabetes I had recently been diagnosed with). I found it much easier to start back again after surgery and didn't have as hard a time building up to my pre-surgery workout levels as I had had getting those levels in the first place! I think your positive outlook and "can do" attitude with help you tremendously. Don't worry about your mom. My stepmom was very leery of the surgery even after the consultation she attended with me. But, after seeing all of the good it has done for me, she is very supportive now. I think her big worry was all of the "potential" dangers of the surgery. Once we were past that and I was home "safe and sound" she relaxed and has enjoyed my successes so far. I had my surgery April 7th and I'm down just over 58 lbs now, so it is definitely working out for me and I'm sure it will for you too. Good luck to you as you begin the journey of a lifetime! Cindy
