Real potatoes vs instant potatoes

Ok I have a question for any of the experienced losers. Yesterday I was at my parents for my sisters Birthday dinner. My mom made real mashed potatoes and I had my 1 ounce of those instead of the instant ones. I had no problems eatting them no did I have any stomach problems. When my mom makes them she takes extra care in making sure there are no lumps in her mashed potatoes. This is the only time I have had the real ones since my surgery. I have only 1 more week before I can introduce real food into my diet. Am I ok to eat them or should I wait another week before I eat more of them? Thanks for your help. Bonnie

Dr. cacucci told me it isn't an issue of tollerance, but that real potatoes weigh much more than instant.

Ok...I think I was blonde in another life...I don't get it? What does it mean they weight more? I understand they are probably "heavier" but isn't one ounce=one ounce? I may be totall dense (high possibility) but I don't understand. Darrah help my simple brain grasp this!! Sam

You had it right with dense.... The molecules in the instant are less dense. Like the difference between heavy whipping cream and skim milk.... Does that help explain it better???

Exactly that remember when we eat 1 oz of something, that is VOLUME, not WEIGHT. The real taters sit heavier on your pouch because they weigh more, the heavier something is, the more apt you are to stretch your little pouch with it But you're right, 1 oz of real taters will take up just as much ROOM as 1 oz of instant, they just dont weigh the same

Like everything in life-everyone has an opinion I always ate either. Was never told I could only eat 'instant'. One doctor's/dietitians plan over another is always going to show differences. But when I did eat 'instant'....they were actually the frozen "real" potatoes that just had to be re-hydrated. I never used the dry 'flakes' Happy journey to you and happy loosing!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for the intrusion but I was just browsing some posts and could not resist responding to this one. Potatoes in general are a poor choice for anyone looking to lose weight. They are extremely high glycemic and thus absorb in the form of sugar into your system very quickly - in fact, the instants and mashed are even worse. This causes a massive release of insulin, leading to a drop in blood sugar and then a sudden craving for simple carbs. I have all of my patients avoid potatoes and potato products - they are worse than pure sugar. Do yourself a favor and choose a vegetable or salad over a starch. Dr. Stickler www.medabolix.com
