1800-2000 calorie diet for insurance

I was wondering if this amount of calories per day was too high for the doctor supervised weight program. I though maybe it should be around 1500 calories but my doctor isn't sure what would be good for insurance predetermination purposes. I know I've been asking a lot of questions lately but I know you are all the ones to ask. I just want to make sure I'm doing what's right for the insurance. Apparently they are going to make it a rough road for me to get approved. Thanks (again), Regina

Call your bariatric surgeons office and ask them what would be an acceptable amount of calories for insurance .. they deal with these diets every day so im sure they can tell you. Good Luck CJ

Regina, Post-op, I'm on 1200-1400 cal/day. Pre-op, I was on 1800-2000 cal/day with my dr. Your doctor has a way to calculate how many calories you need to stay at the weight you are...and how many in order for you to lose 1-2 lbs a week. Chances are great that 1800-2000 was determined for a 2 lb/week loss. You don't want to try too low of calories for many reasons. The most prominant one is that you will feel like you are starving 24/7. I can get by on 1200 because my tummy is tiny compared to my pre-op stomach. If I still had the 32 oz + stomach though, I would be hungery all the time. Secondly, if I were the insurance company, I would view it as 'if she can stick with 1500 calories without having surgery, why approve her for surgery?'. As has been suggested, check with your surgeon since they are use to dealing with insurance companies...but until then, I think 1800-2000 is about right, pre-op. Be sure some form of exercise is included in the program the doctor has you on...even if it's walking 10 minutes a day, 3 times a day. Sherri
